McDonald's food in general seems flat and cardboard-like to me. Even Sonic's burgers are better.

No In n Out near me. There are apparently Culver's in the area, but I never get near them. I've tried Hardee's and Carl's Jr once each (same company I think, maybe same location). Each time the burger looked good, but was full of gristle.

Among chain restaurants I've been to, BK's burgers probably win. But other non-fast-food places are generally better.

What's the consensus on Jakes Wayback burgers ? Have one a town over now, on the same road as a Fudruckers. For that matter, a Wendy's, Burger King, McDonald's, T-Bones, Chilli's.
Most times, I have the best burger by going to the grocery store and making my own. With a fresh potato roll.

That's part of the charm: I love the boring, flat, mass production quality of McD burgers. Home burgers are dime a dozen at any restaurant, but getting the warehouse, Made in China feel right is extremely hard. It's like eating hot sauce because it burns you?

Anyone have the calculations of what these "cheap" fast food items really costs once the double bypass at 45 or the diabeetus is factored in?

I rank Sonic's the worst major chain burgers.

I'd take a quarter pounder from McDonalds over them.

McDonalds tried with the 'McAngus', I hoped it would be good like the Carl's Jr. Six dollar burger, but it was just 'ok'.

By next week, you'll probably proclaim your lifelong love of In-n-Out.

Not everyone has the same opinion, but it seems the weak-minded are certainly more influenceable.

First, what the hell is that supposed to mean?

Second, those two statements are entirely consistent. Most overrated is not worst. OK is not good.

I've said the same exact thing as those two statemets about In n Out for years.

Your post is offensive. Got sidetracked putting you on ignore, now it's done.

This thread is overdue for you to read it, since I already said that.

Eh, I suppose you sort of did, though not quite directly; it was somewhat hidden in your post where you pointed out that in n out was overrated. THAT we agree on. (Actually, it appears we agree on both points.) I pity people who think that McD's is just quick take-out food, but going to Red Robin is actually splurging and getting good food. What chains are good at is consistency: consistently having mediocre (or tolerable with a great price) food.

Ya, I forgot to turn off the 'invisible font' and not hide the text in my post.

Funny how 'wrote in your post' and 'hidden in yoiur post' are the same thing.

Ya, we do pretty much agree, but I'd reiterate that I think a Chili's burger pretty much blows a fast food chain burger out of the water; while a good 'diner' type burger is better.

And a good homemade grilled burger, well, hard to beat that with any of those.

It's funny how even 'gourmet' burgers have a hard time competing with good homemade.

Take a look at this gourmet place - big fancy burger restaruant, can't get much fancier:

http://www.burgerbarsf.com/sf_menu.php

Then read the Yelp reviews - three out of five stars on average. I was underwhelmed too:

http://www.yelp.com/biz/burger-bar-san-francisco

I'll probably go back and try them again, but still.

Here's the Culver's Butter Burger. One of the best (not on the dollar menu though) that I've eaten anywhere.

Since I said there are a ton of great independent burger places in my area, I'm thinking maybe I shoud post some examples. Besides the best I already posted:

Jeffrey's:

Kirk's:

Burgermeister:

Clarke's:

Original Joe's:

Barney's:

I could post a lot more, but they don't look all that different.

all anyone orders from is the dollar menu when I'm there - isn't it designed at minimal/no profit so they can hopefully get people to order other items? I can get 3 burgers, fries ($1.29) and a sweet tea for just over $5.

I get Five Guys once in a while too - would do it more if they were much closer. Quality is obviously a bit different, but I'm no food snob.

Yup.

I don't understand the article, are they saying the number of sales have decreased, or the value of those sales?

Because if it's the latter, it might be because now everyone just orders from the dollar menu to save money.

I used to pay $7-8 for a meal before I started buying from the dollar menu, now I usually spend less than $5. I realized I don't even want the larger portions, or the soda, so the dollar menu is perfect for me.

I read an article somewhere that this move to the dollar menus is (obviously) affecting the profits of all of the restaurants, because everyone is pinching their pennies now. It went on to explain how the sales on soft drinks have decreased, because many people ask for water now, which has prompted many to stop serving tap water and add bottled water to the menu.

Any restaurant that won't serve tap water I probably won't go to.

This dollar menu is against what's good for the businesses, but is a case of where competition works - if one offers it and others don't they'll get a lot more business.

So they're mostly all trapped into offering it, cutting into profits.

Some like Carl's Jr. are trying to not, we'll see how that goes.

mcdonalds gives you free water from their soda machine, which is filtered ro water. I don't think ive been to any fast food place that does any different.

I don't think dollar menus matter when you serve $1.20 things anyway. hardees (carls jr) does that.. their chicken wraps aren't like wendys- theyre like $1.30 but theyre WAY better then Wendy's dollar wraps. way, way better.

The newer mcdonalds we have in our area don't have water spouts in the soda machines, and if you ask for water, they offer you this:

IIRC, they used to charge you $.25 for a cup if you wanted to just get water too.

I was just googling it wondering if other areas were any different, and I guess someone else from the forum experienced this in CA back in 2004 too:
http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=1400931

And here is an old man bitching about the cost of a cup in his area:
http://www.isiahfactor.com/2012/06/...-stuff-mcdonalds-charging-for-a-cup-of-water/

They must have different policies about it in different areas.
