Domain Admins: your policy on email names?

For those of you who administer the emails for domains, what is the email name policy that you have implemented? For instance, do you use initials only (jd@abc.com)? Or first name initial or last name (jdoe@abc.com)?

I've heard the shorter the better. I've also heard to at least use the first name like john@abc.com or johndoe@abc.com because when you meet people and introduce yourself, it's easier to remember the first name with regards to the email you give out.

Thoughts?

i think it depends on the size of the organization

small > jason@ john@

medium > jking@ jdoe@

large > jason.king@ johndoe@

really though, its your preference. but with a larger organization you probably want to stick with john.doe

Depends on how many employees you have. When you start having 1000 of employees, you need longer names to differentiate.

Mine's at first initial + last name. Previous job I worked with it at first.last, had more employees.

We let the users pick their own username/email alias, within reason.

Our account creation app looks at the user's info (first/middle/last name) and gives them a choice from a list of potential combos based on that info. So users might end up with j.q.public@domain.com, john.public@domain.com, or something along those lines. We have this system in place for approx. 10,000 users and it's worked very well so far. It gives the users more options from a predefined set of "approved" variants, and it's diverse enough so there aren't many issues with addresses that are slightly different.

I have a friend who use to work at Microsoft. What they did was first name plus as much of your last name was is needed. So, if you are the first Kevin to ever work at MS, you got kevin@microsoft.com. If you were the second Kevin with a last name starting with T and your last name was Trick, you could get kevintr@microsoft.com.

I do not know if they still do that.

When I was in law school, the school gave out e-mail addresses using first initial plus the first 7 letters of your last name. I had a friend who had an 8 letter last name, so people got his e-mail address wrong all the time (jblowblow@school.edu vs. jblowblo@school.edu).

The primary SMTP address is first.last@...
The secondary is firstinitiallastname@...

I'm not a domain admin, but as part of a humongous company, that's how we all have our emails. Even with that, we have some people who (would) have the same email address, so end up with firstname.middleinitial.lastname.

That's the naming convention used with all my corporate email addresses.

I don?t see how doing it any other way would make sense.

Perhaps some people are getting confused with usernames and email addresses?

How closed-minded of you to say.
