Domain Names - Takign when one expires?

Well,

Didn't know what forum to post thi sin so hopefully someone here can help me.

I'm looking to pick up a domain name for a business my wife wants to start btu of course it's already taken. The info that I get when I check it at www.betterwhois.com says:
Created on..............: Mon, Jun 07, 1999
Expires on..............: Fri, Jun 07, 2002
Record last updated on..: Sun, Jun 10, 2001

Does this mean that if they don't do anything by June 8, 2002 I coudl just go out and register it and then it'd be mine? I've never done anything with domains before and have no idea how it all works.

So let's say I go to somewhere like Godaddy.com which seems to be popular with people here, and on June 8th I try to buy that domain name. Will it work or is it more complicated than that? The current owner has it through www.register.com if that matters.

Any info on this would be greatly appreciated as I hold my breath for another month...

I've always throught that when one expires it should go back into the pool again, but it seems as though that can take a considerably amount of time to happen. As I vaguely recall reading a while back too, network solutions (now verisign) has the nasty little habit of taking expired domains and holding them and auctioning them off...sort of holding your domain for ransom if you ask me. So its doubtful it will be available on that date, maybe a month or two form then though. Email register.com and ask what their policy is!

Viper, just go the registars website you have your domains through and there should be links on how to renew your domain.

you renew them with the company you registered them with, you should receive a notice prior to it expiring.

As Soybomb said, the "expired" domains are usually held by the registrar for 60-90 days after expiration, so the existing owner can rebuy it. After that, it should actually become "available", but it depends on the registrars policy, and their timeliness in updating the database. They would tend to favor the current owner in any dispute over a domain name.

hey, there's this domain name i'd like to purchase but someone already registered it when i checked a month ago, it linked me to icanx.com's suspended page because
it has expired, and when i checked the website today, it's completely down... so does that mean the domain name is available?

i checked at www.betterwhois.com and it says

but no expiration date...so what do i do now?
