a self-titled news organization is somehow not responsible for the factuality of its content..... htf does it qualify as news, then?

I read part of their brief. Their argument is that the allegations being made by Trump and his surrogates were of legitimate public interest. And of course, the mainstream press reported on many of those allegations as well.

The problem for Fox News wasn't that they were merely reporting what they said. It's that they first gave them a platform to say it, then went about agreeing with them and endorsing every last batshit thing they said.

That last fact is why I don't think the 1A will shield them from liability here.

Their brief is suggesting that Fox News was just reporting things like any other news organization, when in fact they were actively complicit in spreading false propaganda about the election.

@HomerJS update the thread title. Dominion now goes after NewsMax and OAN for a “barrage” of lies.

Lindell sort of dismissed the judgment as just a judges opinion. He seemed to be torn over wasting his time appealing the decision since he has more important things for his lawyers to do, getting rid of voting machines in all 50 states. If your opinion is frivolous there is something wrong with the machines why bother to prove it. Just get rid of all of them.

I do not think even if Dominion wins the suit, it would make any difference for Fox. After all, Murdock has a lot of money.
Fox News is not owned by Disney. Disney acquired 21st Century Fox; just before the deal, Fox News was spun out of the company as its own entity.

Edit: there must have been a silent edit there (or my brain is still waking up and I misread: apologies if the latter).

Regardless, Murdoch would care of they lost because Dominion is suing for a crippling amount of money which would hamper Fox News ability to make money going forward.

I can see where the GOP, well, actually the very wealthy folks who bankroll it are going to be very active yet quiet as they are wont to do toward defending persons and entities that Dominion and Smartmatic are suing from the point of view that spreading lies and disinformation is their primary weapon of choice when it comes to shaping public opinion and controlling the narrative about issues that directly affect how and why people vote the way they do.

This lawsuit just got interesting.

I have no doubt the reporting on this story is true.

I always thought Jeanine acted a bit loony during her rants

(WAPO) Rupert Murdoch, the 91-year-old chairman of Fox News parent company Fox Corp, will be forced to answer questions under oath next week about his network’s coverage of the 2020 presidential election.

Murdoch will be deposed on the mornings of Dec. 13 and Dec. 14 as part of election technology company Dominion Voting Systems’ $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit against Fox News, according to a filing in Delaware’s Superior Court. The lawsuit alleges that the network purposely aired false claims about Dominion’s role in the 2020 presidential election to boost ratings and fight off competition from more-conservative-leaning television networks....

Is it possible they will award more than the $1.6 billion? That probably barely dents Murdoch's finances.
Oh yea.... 200 billion dollars fine and a firing squad.
That would be closer to justice.

Murdoch can't plead the 5th because it's not a criminal proceeding, it's a civil case:

BOOM!! Rupert Murdoch has been subpoenaed and will be forced into a deposition for Dominion's $1.6 billion lawsuit against Fox News. Here's the best part - its a CIVIL matter, so pleading the fifth won't work for most of their questions!
— Jon Cooper (@joncoopertweets) December 6, 2022
