Considering our technology level can barely get us to orbit our own planet. The Universe doesnt have much to worry about now. But any civilization that can travel the stars could certainly crush us. I think he has valid points about this situation. Why are we seeking out technologically superior civilizations? Look at the history of such action on our own planet.

Yes they could crush us, just like you could crush an anthill. Or you could drain a fishtank and kill all it's inhabitants. But why would you bother? Much more interesting to look at the fish from time to time and see how they're doing. Then again it's not very interesting is it? I mean fish are boring. Humans are boring too. I'm sure the aliens have better things to do like look at alien porn seeing as human porn wouldn't interest them for very long. In short, the aliens are disappoint.

Everyone didn't know this, they do now though.

Just splash them with water, hit just the right point on their mothership with a crude weapon or wait for earth microorganisms to kill them. Hollywood has provided many how-to guides.

Heh---this probably isn't too far off. Any species coming in from a completely separate biosphere would have a lot of trouble with microorganisms here (and us visa versa).

Yeah, an Oak Tree is going to have more in common with us genetically than an alien.

Well if they mastered that level of tech they would have also had to mastered actually working together, so they might relatively "peaceful". I mean just think about how much more advanced we would be if we as a species could actually work together.

Oh and why would they attack us first, there are bigger planets out there to mine from even within our own solar system.

Wow, the hyper-arrogant, know-it-all Britisher finally accepts the fact that there is a good possibility of extraterrestrial life, and intelligent life too!

If you people used what you have inside your skulls, assuming you do have something in there, you would know that it is a mathematical certainty for extraterrestrial life to exist; even intelligent life.

According to our latest findings, a galaxy has about 400 BILLION stars, give or take 100 billion. And of those stars, about 20% are single stars, not binaries. Single stars are most likely to form solar systems around them. Among those single stars/solar systems, even if you take an extremely low estimate of 1% containing habitable zones, that is about 800 MILLION solar systems with habitable zones in ONE GALAXY. And, there are about 150 - 200 BILLION galaxies in the visible universe, which comprises of just 4% of matter in the known universe!!

At the low end of the estimate, that's about 120 TRILLION stars/solar systems with habitable zones. And you think only this planet "earth" has intelligent life on it? LOLOLOL... Ahh, the hubris of humanity.

Let me break it to you. Nobody cares about you lot for you are far too insignificant in the grand scheme of things.

I think the aliens have the same message to each other about us: Don't talk to us. Because bad news travels fast.

You can't travel faster than the speed of light. God made it like this so shit like that can't happen. Trust me on this.

How guilty would you feel if you did crush an anthill?

To bad traveling at say .99 still gets an object to travel at ~7 light years in a single year(from their perspective).

Isn't this like, "duh" shit. I don't need Stephen Hawking to tell me what I figured out on my own, and I assume many others have too... It's quite obvious that if aliens do exist... We probably don't want to be in contact with them. >_> What are the chances that those life forms are going to be all super hippy like after fucking up their own home world?

Well, it might take them a while to figure out the Sci-Fi channel is actually not news. While the aliens are trying to engineer a counter against the U.S.S. Enterprise from 1966 signals, they're gonna be in for a surprise when there's a fucking death star in 1977! Hell, maybe that's why they haven't made contact. They'll be all like, "Oh an egg, like from Mork & Mindy!" but it'll be like from Aliens. They don't know. Stupid alien races.

 they fear our Jedi and our Asgard beam weapons.

People often assume that aliens will be hundreds or thousands of years more advanced. What if they are millions or billions of years more advanced ? Or perish the thought that we are the most advanced in the universe, someone had to be first .

Billions of years more advanced would be extremely unlikely given the age of the universe, but at millions of years more advanced, they would almost certainly have to have be extremely peaceful for them to have not destroyed there self during that time.

An alien race with the ability to travel the stars I highly doubt will care about us for trivial things like resources (the level of technology it would require to do so would likely mean they can manipulate matter and energy almost completely).

Comparing the aliens to the European discoverers of America and us to the Native Americans is an incorrect analogy. It would be more like the Aliens being the European discoverers and us being ants they may or may not step on.

They probably smell funny.
I'm more concerned about pointy elbows.

Heh---this probably isn't too far off. Any species coming in from a completely separate biosphere would have a lot of trouble with microorganisms here (and us visa versa).
That's assuming that alien life form still exists in a natural biological state.

So don't travel faster than the speed of light, force space around you to move faster and/or use wormholes.

Just think how much more advanced we would be if we were constantly at war with other States? Or, at least, cold war.

I don't argue that progress can only happen during war, but right now, our best progress is born out of such. The Cold War serves as a key example in recent progress.

But competition in general is what is necessary for progress. Our best hope is peaceful, friendly competition. A world government residing over all the states, removing the anarchistic variable from international politics, would help bring this change to our civilization.

How? The way I see it, if a world government unites everyone under a single banner, states can trade competitively, but not born out of necessity. Multiple parties would be invited to work on the same project, parties that span multiple states and include a large number of participating citizens - be them scientists, engineers, or whatever. This more friendly competition, with large groups working to one solution, would bring not only a great deal of new solutions, but also multiple solutions - solutions that can be used as stepping stones to even greater progress.

And space-traveling species is likely to come across other species. Conflicts will happen due to the nature of sentience.

A species that runs into us, needn't be an aggressor to spell trouble for our way of life. But it could also mean great things to our progress, regardless of the outcome - unless of course it is total annihilation.

If we meet a species that has met other species in war, it could still be a species that has brought united peace to its people. Hell, it could be an extremely peaceful species in general - to be peaceful does not have to equate to being a pacifist, as to uphold peace might require a show of force. Universal politics is something we have no clue over - aggressors could be a very rare thing for all we know, as it could spell trouble for said species in the wide universe. But they arguably exist, as it's simply a product of an anarchistic environment.

For all we know, we may have been monitored for thousands of years, and the united intergalactic body has ordered all species to refrain from contacting our planet. I certainly would - let that miserable planet sort itself out, see if the species can prove themselves fit for their planet as a united species, let alone fit for the stars.

Would you want to invite us to the Assembly of the Universe, knowing how little we can cooperate with each other? I'd say, let them prove their worth, we'll invite them when they are ready.

Well the genie is out of the bottle anyways. We have had EM radiation spreading away from the planet for the last 70+ years that paints a huge bullseye on us. Not only that but someone looking at our emissions could pretty much figure out exactly what the extent of our technology is.
It's only a big bullseye if these aliens venture within 70 light-years of Earth. Otherwise, as far as they're concerned we may as well not exist at all.
