Could be. I just see them more as a bunch of people who exist in a bubble. They don't trust outside sources of information and they denigrate all outside ideas if they don't agree with theirs. They feed on each others attitudes and as they are pretty terrible to start with they just get worse and there's no one to say "Hold up, that's an awful thing to say!".
You see that behaviour in lots of in groups. It's just that this in groups job is to share it's ideas and values to the out group and that's where you see the car crash.

Trump expressing his pent up angst and hatred against Obama by actually having a stand-in to rail against seems to include layers of emotional issues that he has to deal with in order for him to feel good about himself.

I can see where his racism comes into play, yet there are these other issues that include envy, abject fear of Obama being so much smarter than he is, so much more well liked on the world stage than he and the fact that Obama was a lowly peasant that became the most powerful man on the face of the earth rather than a man like himself, an adored celebrity whose bequeathed wealth meant that he was so much more successful, so much more deserving than that black fella who affirmative-action'd his way into the Oval Office.

Try as he may, Trump being Trump can only play second fiddle to Obama when it comes to the legacies they leave behind them after completing their terms in office basically because Obama was (is) for real whereas Trump is a figment of his own imagination.

I'm pretty confident in saying that Trump must have a well-worn pin pricked voodoo doll of Obama that he abuses every night while tweeting his way to sleep.
