running an Asrock A7SX8 512mbram, AMD 2100+, Win 98se

first question....
having a 40 gig slave drive, I noticed that as it was showing up on boot up and in teh bios as a 33gig,
it's not being recognized in windows.
I recently bought a western digital 80 gig. it too shows up on boot up and in the bios and an 80 gig.
but does not show up as d: in windows.

Well, in trying to get this to work, I changed something in the bios for the IDE from "both" to "primary"
Now, it only gets to the boot screen and freezes after detecting the primary IDE devices.
I tried getting back into set up (pressing F2) but to no avail. nor will it boot from the floppy
any ideas?...

...besides awarding me the dunce of the month award?

Try hitting F1 to F12 (one per boot sequence) and find out if one of those resets your bios to it's default settings. If that does not work: try to find the reset jumper on your mobo (look at the manual for that) and reset it. After that setup the bios the way you like it (keep your claws off the ide stuff ).

And Windows probably does not see the disks because they need to be partitioned first. In Win '98 you could go to the MS-DOS prompt and type "fdisk". Press yes at the first question. After that see if fdisk finds your disk and partition them. DO NOT partition any existion partition, ONLY unpartitioned space! Otherwise you will have to say bye bye to Windows too

Maybe try pressing DEL to get into your bios? At least that's how my mobo gets to it. Let us know the rest of your specs (computer hardware) so we can make a better educated guess on how to reset your bios so you can see your harddrives and boot.

Well, I just stuck a jumper on the CMOS pins to clear it to get it restarted. I dunno why I didnt think of that before. Thank God it came to mind or else I wouldn never been able to get back on here to see that suggestion.
Works fine now....kinda

I've tried running Fdisk and format, but that neither slave drive will show up there either.
The 40 gig is partitioned and formatted already, had it running at one point.

Specs:
Asrock A7SX8
512mbram DDR PC 2100,
AMD 2100+,
Win 98se
Gforce FX 5200
Creative Audigy 2 zs
Iomega zip drive
Toshiba CDRW

Hmm...what else do you need?

One thing...
Both drives show up in device manager as:
Generic IDE Disk Type 47

Now, I know they used to show up as specific brand and size.
I have a feeling it's a screwed up IDE driver or something..even though I've reinstalled it twice.

Are you using 80 conductor, 40 connector ATA 100/133 cable on the drives? Neither drive should be showing up as a Type 47. Go over your setup carefully.

Well, you could try reïnstalling the busmaster drivers http://www.intel.com/design/chipsets/drivers/busmastr/ for Intel or http://www.viaarena.com/ for VIA chipsets. If you have an Ali chipset (wich I suspect, since the mobo name starts with an A) try here: http://www.aliusa.com/eng/support/support_driver.htm

What is it in set up I am specificly looking for?

as it sits, I have a 13 gig on the same IDE cabel that works fine.
Both when looking the primary and secondary IDE disks in device manager, one comes up with a drive letter, the other is blank.
