*DONE* Need help with daughter's homework

I need help with some questions because we don't have the science book here to look up these terms. Help if you can:

2) The normal gradual changes that occur in types of species that live in an area (ten letter answer) succession? <--my guess

3) The portion of the shoreline that is covered with water at high tide and is exposed to air at low tide (ten letter word then "ZONE") intertidal zone

6) Forest dominated by climax communities of trees that lose their leaves every autumn (3 words: nine letters, nine letters, then "FOREST") temperate deciduous forest

9) a cold forest region dominated by cone-bearing evergreen trees (five letters) taiga

12) regions that are wet for all or most of the year (eight letters) wetlands (ha ha, I can't believe I didn't get this one. I've written wetland permits in my career)

That's the ones we can't solve. All help appreciated.

Taiga is definitely right. "Deciduous" probably is part of the answer to 6.

I'm not sure adaptation is right. The questions are not about individual species, but about the ecosystem itself. Another question references "succession" in refering to the events in an ecosystem, so I think that is the right answer to 2.

Well, we're going with the answers I have put in bold at the OP. Thanks for all the help, folks. My daughter and I appreciate it. We're going to go play video games now, all thanks to some kind folks on AnandTech.

I think adaptation is the correct answer for number 2. If a species enters a new area it will gradually change from the process of natural selection to be better suited to its new environment.

This is all information that she's never going to use in the real world. I swear, 99.9% of what we learn in school is completely pointless to know.

teach her how to invest her money

teach her a second language

teach her how to speak in front of an audience

teach her how to stay out of debt

teach her about the consequences of unsafe sex


This is the kind of stuff she needs to be learning in school.... not what a "temperate deciduous forest" is. :roll:
