Depending on the client, I get anywhere from $30 to $50/hour, freelance. The company I work for bills my time through them out at something like $120/hour.

Make it a time and materials contract. Give him an estimate for the # of hours and an hourly rate. Make sure he understands that it could be higher or lower than the estimated # of hours.

In any event, make sure that you agree on a _written_ contract. It will ensure you that you will get compensated fairly for your work and it will ensure your client that he/she will get what they paid you for.

This is outsourced intl. Global rates are way lower than local rates.

If you don't agree with it then fine, but a 30 second search on digitalpoint and you can find graphic designers working for way less than 20 bucks an hour.

Not sure that a written contract would be enforceable in this instance.

That's very hard to do without more details - there's a huge difference in work between say, a menu and a prospectus. One of the yearly projects I do is about half (page-count-wise) program rules in legalese, but those pages account for about 80% of the work involved with the book.

You mentioned it's color - is that 4/C? There's a big diff between being given all the images as color corrected CMYK with clip paths and being given a memory card from his camera phone and expected to clip out the Eiffel tower, give it a metallic PMS hit and finally build a varnish plate for it.

Hammer everything out in the contract - what content will you be provided and what will you be responsible for creating. Specify a number of rounds of corrections/changes (I do one) before an hourly rate kicks in, above and beyond the initial bid. Specify what, if any, involvement you'll have once you go to print.

I am not a lawyer and I have no experience in these matters, but I would assume that there are laws that deal with outsourced contracts. Given how much outsourcing is going on these days, it wouldn't surprise me if there are laws to cover it.

Edit: Maybe someone more knowledgeable in this area could chime in?

meh. I notice no quality difference in people "who know how to use photoshop" and charge 1-30 bucks an hour.

Graphic artists who charge 50-150/hr+ however...

If you wish to charge by the job/project then:

You need to figure out how much time you estimate that it will take for you to finish the project.
Multiply that time by 25% - you are not always as good as you think the first time around.
Determine what you feel is a fair hourly rate for you.
Multiple that rate times your estimated(adjusted) hours to do the work.

Set payment schedule for work completion. This way you do not have to invest all your time into nothing if you get scammed (not paid). And the clientsees what they are paying for in steps.

You may wish to have the payment placed into escrow (held by a third party) until you have developed a working relationship with the client.

He ambiguously described layout work - something I'd be fairly shocked to see bill out at 100+ an hour in any volume. Retouching != layout work, and nobody should be using photoshop to produce a 16 page book, so I'm not sure what you're getting at.

I charge more for retouching work - though on the same note, you can find people who do that dirt cheap, too. Again, you'll often get what you pay for.
