LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- "Donnie Darko," a cult drama starring Jake Gyllenhaal as a disturbed teenager, is getting a new theatrical release, featuring 20 minutes of never-before-seen footage.

Newmarket Films, which released the film in 2001, is unveiling a director's cut at the Seattle Film Festival on May 29. It plans to release the film theatrically in Seattle before moving into other markets later in the summer.

The new version will also have new visual effects and music.

"Even though I am proud of the theatrical version of the film, I've always felt that the story was somewhat compromised in order to come in under two hours," said "Darko" writer-director Richard Kelly. "With this version I feel like I've finally been able to complete the film."

"Darko" grossed just $515,545 at the domestic box office but has since gained a following on DVD, where it has grossed more than $10 million domestically. It also stars Jena Malone, Drew Barrymore, James Duval and Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Hmm. I wonder if I can get Retrofantasma/Carolina Theatre or Madstone to show it this summer.

this movie was great before everyone started liking it simply because of the Mad World cover.

that bothers me.

That seems to be true of a lot of things these days. The song rules, but I only heard of it after I saw the movie.

I completely fell in love with this film. Pure genius. It dominated my thoughts for about two full days after I first watched it.

humm... I heard the song, but I watched the movie because a lot of people were suggesting it. Only when a friend said... "hmm... Donnie Darko... sounds familiar. Isn't this new song from the soundtrack...?" I connected song to movie. Anyway, Donnie Darko is great, so is Mulholland Drive (the only Lynch I've seen to date). But Donnie Darko is easier to watch, its very interesting, well done, AND you stand a chance to understand it after seing it once. Mulholland Drive is so much harder to get.

The movie is absolutely brilliant, in part because of the stunning cinematography - they did an excellent job of capturing the ambience of the locale and time frame.

However, having seen the directors cut, it's clear that the writer/director are complete morons, which is a real shame. I recall one of them (dunno which) doing the narration and saying (not verbatim) "Yeah, it's like Deus Ex Machina, which means 'The God Machine'" and then briefly muddles it some more by trying to explain that

The one thing that really crapped the movie for me was the line about christina appelgate. Not only was she not attractive, she played a total ditz, and obviously the type of girl donnie would be more interested in mocking than fvcking. Now Alyssa Milano (who as you may know was the scripted masturbatory fantasy - removed for legal reasons) .. well, I need say no more.

It will be interesting to see if they finally got permission to use her name in the D.C.

You have seen the directors cut? Where, how, etc.?
The writer is the director And having seen the normal version I don't think he's a moron. Not everyone knows latin, if he only would have said Deus Ex Machina I would have thought of Deus Ex, the computer game.

One thing I hope for the directors cut is that they don't try to explain the movie. Can you tell me, since you probably have seen both version, which one is better? DC or normal? Was about to get the DVD, but now I'm unsure if I shouldn't wait.

I don't know, but has Alyssa Milano has been known in the end of the 80s? And I find her quite... ugly. Not really, but there are thousands of better looking ladies.

I remember the Deus Ex Machina comment, but to me, it came across as more of a joke than a serious statement.

Weird, I was reading this thread and Gary Jules - Mad World randomly came up in my Winamp playlist. :Q

You know, I think all the complaining about the new forums would have been reduced if they had brought back Blue Shocked Smiley. This one is even worse than the last one.

defron: The Directors Cut?

Gonzo: Flaws? Which flaws?

cerebusPu: Yes, only $500.000, but then it got $10.000.000 on DVD sales. Only in the US, but it got released outside the US too and gained a pretty nice fanbase. Kelly had $4.500.000 to make this movie.
