Overall, we find that America's lowest-earning one-fifth of households received roughly $8.21 in government spending for each dollar of taxes paid in 2004. Households with middle-incomes received $1.30 per tax dollar, and America's highest-earning households received $0.41.

Maybe you should thank the rich for supporting the rest of the population instead of lambasting them in a jealous rage...don't bite the hand that feeds.

Which column did they add the trillions of dollars spent on military campaigns overseas to protect the interest of the rich?

More tax money get directly spent on the poor than they contribute, and less on the rich than they contribute.

I know this, because it's the reason my money cries at night.

*why did they take my borthers and sisters from you? WHY??* *whimper-sob*

The rich may be able to be criticized for alot of things (well, everyone can be) but not contributing to the country surely isnt one of them

Wrong. If you will read the post:

"Overall, we find that America's lowest-earning one-fifth of households received roughly $8.21 in government spending for each dollar of taxes paid in 2004. Households with middle-incomes received $1.30 per tax dollar, and America's highest-earning households received $0.41."

you will clearly see that all three groups are said to earn. So my question, had you been less thick, was which group benefits by having the greatest earnings.

Don't bite the hand that feeds. That's great. The rich are vampires that depend on a functioning society of millions of others for their wealth. Out in the jungle they would be worth less than a monkey and dead in a couple of days.

The premise of this report is flawed. The rich benefit in many ways from government spending, not all of which are in the form of direct subsidies. A good example.. say the government spends $100 million to build low income housing. Well, that contract is awarded through a construction company owned by some very wealthy individuals and they profit substantially as well.

So, well... of course the rich pay more intaxes proportionaltely. That's the point of a progressive tax system. The disparity is not as large as that report would have you believe though.

Moonbeam is also correct that many of the rich in this country depend on a system that is fundamentally massively stacked in their favor. They benefit hugely from this system, and so I don't have a big problem with the system taking some of that back.

So many jealous non-rich here.

"The premise of this report is flawed",
"The rich are vampires...Out in the jungle they would be worth less than a monkey and dead in a couple of days. ";

waiting patiently for the rest. The contempt for the LARGEST contributers of tax money is very telling.

Next up, the top 20% is broken down into 5% brackets. Holy sh*t, the top 5% receives less benefits compared to the other 15%. Holy sh*t!

So the poor aren't protected via the military? Only the rich? hmmm

Let's think... we leave Iraq, the price of oil goes up to $5 a gallon... who suffers more the rich or the poor?

I'm guessing you didn't read my post. I suggest you go back and try again. My pont was not that the rich do not pay more then the poor, as that is obvious. My point was the disparity is made to look artificially large in that report. That is not contempt... that is reality.

Strings are attached to every penny the poor and middle class get back from the rich. The rich can go **** themselves, because frankly this is all about wrestling control of the money. Eliminate income taxes altogether and watch the economy that applies to the joe commoner soar. Why? Because business would have to follow natural forces of business and not a somewhat centralized planning. But that wouldn't be fair or right to the rest of mankind, because americans are driving global warming. And we all know america must be saved from its dumb self. Do it for the women and children in the developing world. I can feel your pain, but do it for the children... they need your jobs.

Why would gas go up? More importantly why would gas prices have gone up if the status quo in Iraq had been kept?

Well thanks for admitting to the truth that the false war is for oil.

We're better off with horse and buggy than selling out to you and your kind.

50% of the people in this country pay 96% of income taxes, which means the other 50% pay less than 4%. Is that enough disparity for you?

Look... figures for you... Page 18 of PDF
Effective Income Tax rate for 2001
Bottom 20% -5.6%
Next 20% 0.3%

Share of Tax liability
Lowest 20% 1.1%
Next 20% 5%
Top 20% 65.3%
Top 10% 50%- that means 10% of the people in this country pay have the federal income taxes.

Everyone who works for the construction company in your example would benefit, from the owners down to the guys laying bricks.
