That's the default. You go into a tool shop, you don't say I need some metric hex head wrenches. You say I need some metric wrenches. They don't frequently sell square or torx or whatever else kinds of wrenches. I had a hard enough time trying to find torx head wrenches.

The point is that the fastener is still metric. The thread size/pitch is not "torx."

Example. <-- That is a metric screw.

Saying "I need a metric box wrench" is very different from saying "that m6x1 torx bolt is not a metric bolt."

Also, have you not heard of Amazon? Or auto parts stores? Or Sears? How was it hard to find torx drive sockets?

Once I was finished stunning JLee with the information he didn't have the tools I needed for my BMW, it took me 5 minutes to order everything I needed on Amazon.

Let's condemn all BMWs!! I bought an orange the other day. It was partially rotten and had too many seeds. I don't think people should buy oranges. Yes, that makes sense.

Well... tbh, it sounds more like TridenT bought a lemon, not an orange.

But BMW maintenance costs are... well... legendary.

https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/the-most-and-least-expensive-cars-to-maintain-by-maddy-martin

IMO it's just part of the mystique/exclusivity. If you can't afford to maintain one, you can't afford to have one, even if you can afford to buy one.

Glad I'm not exclusive enough to pay hundreds of dollars markup for parts and have to buy tons of unnecessary tools just to get simple maintenance done. You know the difference between a bmw and a porcupine? The bmw has the pricks inside.

Never understood this kind of hate, though maybe its because I live in North Jersey where ~50% of the cars are BMW's and everyone BMW or not drives like an ***hole

Well, besides documented evidence that BMW drivers are more aggressive: http://blogs.marketwatch.com/thetell/2013/08/13/bmw-drivers-really-are-jerks-studies-find/

It's probably the brand's (particularly the 3-series) association with these guys: http://www.30kmillionaires.com/

It's like hating on hipsters. Not constructive, and probably a big side-order of sour grapes, but damn does it make you feel good.

I'm on my second BMW. First one was a 2006 330i that I wrecked. http://www.portvapes.co.uk/?id=Latest-exam-1Z0-876-Dumps&exid=threads/wrecked-my-bimmer.2495746/
I remember I did all the maintenance (water pump, etc) as preventative as it didn't fail on me. 180k miles. It could be because it was not a turbo motor.

My current car is the ActiveHybrid5 and it is a turbo N55. I've only had it since December and put a few thousand miles on it but I've had absolutely no issues with it so far. I tried to hypermile for a full 400 mile trip with 60/40 hwy/city driving and got 31.5mpg. Average normal driving I get 27 to 28.

I would rather have Torx head bolts on a car, than Hex (allen key) type any day. First, they can be used in areas where less clearance is available, like headers or intake manifold. Second, Torx bolts are almost impossible to strip where the bit goes in, but on an Allen Key type bolt, it is very easy to round out the hex keyway or round off the hex key itself. As to BMW or Mercedes, both are very nice and when running properly nice to ride in and drive them. But when they break, the parts cost is very high and depending on what mechanic you use, his labor rate can be higher. And on some of them, you have to take many items off the car to get to the one you want to replace (good old Murphy's Law again)

I don't really care what the bolts are like - but on a $50k car, you'd think they'd include those plastic bolt snap-covers so the darn things don't rust and turn circular.

I've been looking for another BMW to drive as a daily. Getting tired of the 4runner and its rough ride and want something cushy like a 330i. I like the look, feel, and experience of them and if you can do maintenance yourself, they aren't much more expensive than any other car. I bought a set of triple square sockets when I had my VW and have used them many times but they weren't expensive. BMW is basically the same.

Just really isn't the case... Parts for this car are outlandishly high. Everything costs more. Even spark plugs cost 2-3x as much because BMW tax. That's not even going through OEM. I think OEM spark plugs are $15+/piece. I got mine for about $11-12.

$400+ waterpump ain't fun either. This charge pipe I have to replace is $160 and that's the cheapest I found. Most list for $200-350. It's just a piece of aluminum or steel piping in most cases. The plastic version from BMW runs around $200 from what I've heard.

It's a plastic tube. That's all.

Check out the prices of parts on Ferrari or Lamborghini or Porsche or Rolls Royce .. They know you have $$$ and they want it.

Good god you suck at shopping. You can get the OEM ZR5TPP33 Bosch plugs for $9/ea from Amazon. Those are normal prices for turbo charge pipes. I'm still going with your driving is a factor in yours failing. The only one I'll give you is the water pump but both JLee and I specifically told you it was a $500 water pump before you bought your car. But in general, welcome to owning a luxury car.

It's amazing how you did "extensive" research on this car yet seem to be surprised by information that literally everybody knows.

I gave you a link before your bought yours of a $30 Torx socket set that covers every maintenance/repair item you've mentioned so far save for spark plugs themselves and needing a spark plug socket is pretty normal. So again, if you spent $300 on tools, you just fail at shopping. Basically you were told all of this info before you even bought your car. Do you actually retain any info you are provided or does it just float out the other side?

Seriously, sell it and go back to an old Civic. You clearly aren't qualified to own a nice car.

So stupid, pay more because you can, and your reward is that you have to spend more of it just to keep the infernal thing running.

I'll stick with Japanese

Used BMW has problems and needs repair work - "Well, BMWs are expensive to own and maintain."

Used Chevy or Ford has problems and needs repair work - "What'd you buy that crap for?"

To be fair..the water pump for my CTS-V was twice what a Corvette pump was, and it was still under $200...

"Well, hey, it's cheap to fix."
"Where's the nearest salvage yard?"
"Chevy/Ford sold like a bazillion of these things? What do you mean you can't get the part until tomorrow?"
"You only work on Chrysler? You mean I have to go three blocks over to see a Chevy/Ford specialist?"
"Yeah, but the antenna assembly is cheaper on Amazon."
"I'm going to need to stop at the dollar store and get another 7mm box wrench."

why should this surprise anyone? BMW's are fun as shit to drive. Certainly more than Lexus/Infinity/Mercedes IMO.

THIS. I've owned two Lexus IS300's, driven a bunch of ES's of various age. They're fantastic cars. They're certainly miles ahead of my 135i in terms of reliability, cost of ownership, and build quality. But the 135i is a hell of a lot more fun to drive.

That said, I'd love to see some actual proof that BMW drivers drive more aggressive than people trucks, especially lifted ones.
