So I bought a cheapo Sony home theatre system, just because I needed something run of the mill that would play my MP3s and still get AM/FM, so I bought this a while back:

http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSH...oryName=hav_HomeTheater_SpeakerSystems

It lasted for about, eh, 3 or 4 months. I was playing it at very loud volumes last night and the reciever/amp blew. I know it did because it smelled terrible in my room and the damn thing kept flashing "protect."

Just a warning for anyone considering buying Sony. Be warned. The good news is I got an extended service or replacement warranty (I forget which one it is) at Circuit City so I should be ok.

Try not to buy Sony anything. Why support a company that thinks it's perfectly ok to have CD's install rootkits on your PC?

Did you let it cool down and try it again? If its displaying PROTECT than that would indicate that it has shut off due to some sensor input, most likely thermal.

It seems really trendy to trash Sonys name and their product these days but you bought a "cheapo" system and from your message I am assuming subjected it to sustained heavy use. If this is the case then I dont agree with the "Don't buy a Sony HT" sentiment.

Better than spending a couple grand on a Bose system and wondering why it sucks.

I bought a mid-end system about 4 years ago, and it's been amazing from day one. You pay nothing and you'll get nothing.

you bought one system that went bad, so now you'll denounce the whole company and all of it's products.

I had the same experience with honda - I bought one honda, the transmission failed, so I'm swearing off hondas.

My Sony receiver just started having problems a couple weeks ago. It's lasted 7.5 years. Not bad for 300 bucks.

Well... I'd use a little more tact than this, but I agree with the general idea. You'd have to live under a rock to still not avoid Sony these days like the plague they are, but they'll never change if people just keep buying their crap. Sony is an excellent example of Pavlovian behaviorism. I haven't bought their crap for 15 years now.

i won that exact system , and i have no complaints, i have devices using the optical in, and analog, all my game systerms and whatnot. Also PCM audio sounds pretty good. Its a smaller room its filling but you scare me with this thread....I usually only go to volume levels of 20-30 in the particular room if that helps. what level were you playing at?

rootkits aside, you can't beat Sony at TV quality, at least not often. Their LCD's are the best, and their projector's are the best.

My older Sony receiver loves higher levels, granted it is only 110 watt x 5 channels. Usually listening levels are 50/75.
