Don't buy cheap power supplies

This 500 watter was powering our main backup server at work. lol We have a thousand dollar RAID card in there that blew up a couple of weeks ago, and we had to get another.

Nobody checked on the power supply. I imagine it's been running bad for MONTHS. This morning it wasn't turned on, and wouldn't come up. I pulled the supply, and tested with a new QUALITY one. Look what I found inside the dead one:

Cheap caps, probably not intended to be used in a server environment. It is the failure of many a cheap supply.

Rule of thumb...you get what you paid for when it comes to a PSU.

Looks like the caps on several dead mobos I have in the garage. Don't know why I'm still hanging on to them.

What brand PSU?

Fixable. Replace with rubycons, all better
Assuming the rest of the PSU is decent quality of course.

The funny thing (not usually) is that most people look at the PSU as the last component that they consider. This leads to cheap purchases, because they blew most of their $ on other components. This then can get quite ugly because of a cheap PSU in a heavily loaded system!

Looks like one of the caps lost its magic blue smoke and the others were soon to follow.

Peopel I work with here do not listen to me when I warn them about crap PSUs.. We have had a couple fail, but no real disasters yet. Of course we do have some mid-end
psus- I saw and Earthwatts around

I was just about to make a new thread about intel burn's new ver. and furmark xtream test that blew my cooler master extrema 600w to kingdom heaven. I was having a bit of problems with it powering up a GTX275 with a Athlon x2 seems that the stress was tooo much for it to bear.

Mine went out with a loud blast thankfully non of the things were damaged still testing tough. Even if it was overloaded it was not suppose to do what it did sending it to the dealer 2moro maybe i will get a replacement or maybe he will blame me lets see what happens.

Good to know this about CM PSU's. Seems like a fairly new version too, but this is why I try and make sure I have a good warranty and decent customer service too. I have had NO issues with Antec support. I had 1 PSU go out after a year (not my computer) and they replaced it without any hassles. Then I bought a case/psu combo from ebay for my son's computer and the PSU went out 1 month after using it. It was a second hand PSU and was close to the 3 yr. warranty. They replaced it without any issues either, so to say the least, I was quite happy overall!!
