Hmmm...tempting indeed. I tend to buy value video cards, like my current card that I picked up for $130 when the prices first dropped majorly on the x1900 series (just before the x1950 cards launched, IIRC). This could be another deal like that, I guess. Or I could add $35 and get a 9600GT, or $50 and get an 8800GT, or, or, or!

...or maybe I should just wait until the 8800GTs are in the $150 price range.

Any word on whether the EVGA cards have a quiet fan?

I think the XFX card is sexier looking with a black PCB than the green EVGA card.

I got mine today (well, buying it for a friend) and tested it out to make sure it wasn't DOA. Yeah, that fan is NOISY but also moves quite a bit of air. So, no way to control the fan using Ntune?

Nope...it's a two wire connection....no leeway at all.

Zalman VF700/VF900 are two that are safe with the XFX PCB & the EVGA should be compatible with any other that works on the 8800GT.

Can anyone confirm that the VF700 will fit on this and will cool adequately? Please provide any temp readings if possible.

Thanks for the info Skillyho. I'm also moving up from an x1900gt and for $120AR, I can't resist. I've already got a VF700 lying around, so no extra cost there.

It's doubtful the S1 will work if the S2 didn't...I've been looking for all aftermarket coolers that are compatible with the XFX PCB and only the Zalman's seem to be having success. I'm sure more coolers will be found compatible as these cards are out a while longer.

EVGA's 8800GS is another story, but their BIOS is locked at 680MHz on the core (unlike the XFX which doesn't have said restrictions).

Hopefully someone will put out a cooler for this thing soon that isn't over $30 b/c the fan noise is driving me crazy. Anyone know a way to put a potentiometer in line on the fan? If I could just drop it to 70-80% I'm sure it would take the edge off.

Exactly what didnt fit with S2?

was there something obstructing? or did the holes just didnt line up?

I am curious.

thanx!

It just didn't fit...the widest spacing of the outtermost 4-holes was still too small to fit the XFX board. Since then, the S2 has been installed on a EVGA 8800GT with no issues.

I see alot of reviews on newegg about the fan being loud is it really that bad?

Also are the 680mhz and 580mhz 8800GS cards exactly the same aside from clocks?

Is this the best card for $150 or under?

Thanks

I'm guessing the S1 has a different base........the S2 just didn't have a big enough base (even on the outermost holes) to fit the XFX GS.

Edit: Yep. S1 & S2 Pics

Top stable ATItool clock for me is 720 core, 1728 shader, 1640 mem. Looks like I got marginal memory. The EVGA supposedly uses 1ns chips so it should be a better overclocker. It also appears they use the new 8800GT cooler with bigger fan and a reference board design. I may ask Newegg for an RMA and get the EVGA. :clock:....waiting for free shipping...

XFX board design is not reference so HSF fitment issues will be trial and error until enough people share their results.

Done, the XFX is going back. I can't stand the noise any longer. After receipt of my EVGA replacement I will post up new OC results.

BTW, EVGA 8800GS with free shipping and rebate for $129.99 @ Newegg

Admittantly I havent read through the 43 or so replies but EVGA has released their 8800GS now. MSRP is $160, 9600GT's MSRP is like $220 so its a step up option (I bought a 8600GT specifically waiting for a better card to be released and step up to it).

I think somewhere sillyhos link, if i remember right, said the fan on the xfx was 24bda and this link is saying the EVGA is at 20-22bda on the fan

Do you think these dba reading are correct?

http://www.techpowerup.com/rev...eForce_8800_GS/22.html

Also what would be better having the higher core clock like Sillyho's 720 and less memory clock or the Evga with a OC of 680 max core and 2000+ mem or is it a wash

I will report back my subjective findings. Odds are the fan will be much quieter since I will be able to adjust its speed

I just picked up the EVGA version as well, and it's going to be delivered sometime today. I'll post back with my max stable OC's and volume of the heatsink for those that care.
