Bah, I got the EVGA on 3/12. Oh well. Ended up same $ as the XFX I traded back.

My stable results are:

Without BIOS modification
675/1564/2072 limited

With BIOS mod, core forced to chosen setting
700/1564/2072

With BIOS mod, core forced to chosen setting and voltage set to 1.1V (using NiBiTor)
721/1564/2072

Those are my numbers for ATITool stability beyond 10 minutes. I can run 731/1564/2106 but not completely artifact free. For some reason the shader hates to run @1620. That is the spec for EVGA's superclocked model. I'm going to keep playing around with that one.

The core is definitely locked to ~680. Any attempt to push past without first BIOS modding core to something like 700 or above will simply not work. Once the core is set high in the BIOS, the system will act like it wants to limit it. Sometimes locking core/mem/shaders, other times no problem, then nothing will work. I had to uninstall and reinstall Rivatuner to wipe out most those problems.

Funny that this EVGA core OC is on par with my old XFX. Although it was well worth the exchange for two reasons: Memory @ 2GHz and quiet/adjustable fan.

Speaking of fans, the EVGA can be just as loud as XFX if you set it to 100%. Anything beyond 70%, though, didn't seem to help drop temps much more. Makes you wonder if the XFX really needs to be full throttle.

Edit: Temps at max clocks are 75C with fan @ 70% and 79C at 50%.

Am I missing something?

Right now Ati/AMD has the 3870x2 win.
I think in 2 weeks when the 9800gx2 is released the partys over till they come out with the 4000 series. At that point who knows? mabe Tulip?

As far as i heard AMD is reduceing prices how does 170 for the 3870 sound.

IMO...since the prices for a 8800gt (512MBer) are sub $200 (PNY was/is $160 after $40MIR), $170 would be a okay "general" price provided some e-tailer were selling them for <$150.

What were the tems at stock clocks? Just wondering how much they increased after OC

At stock clocks and auto fan the core stabilizes to ~75C with fan @ 45% loaded. Idle is 50C with auto fan running 30%. BTW, this case's cooling is fairly poor and room gets warm when I'm running all machines.

If I set the fan to always run at 55% in Rivatuner - idle at 45C and loaded at 69C/low 70's. More fan gets it no lower than ~65C.

Seems this HSF is fairly average at cooling. I will probably get a vf900 and try to push this baby further.

Same temps here (set to 58% in RivaTuner). Did you use a windows app or DOS to flash the VGA BIOS? My max stable has been 685/2140 but I'm sure I can get more out of the Core with the lock bypassed.

Let us know about the VF900 if you go that route.

Hey just got my system up and running the other day and i got a couple questions.

Im playing Team Fortress 2 with everything on high at 1152 X 864 roughly on my 17" CRT (22" coming soon) and i was wondering what antialiasing should be set at because by default its off.

Also with rivatuner when overclocking did you link the Core clock with the shader or did you do each independently?

With the core/shader/memory how many mhz did you take them up at a time.

The last card i had didnt have a shader clock and didnt overclock far so i was only able to take it up a few mhz at a time

Mine stock is currently at 550/1375/1600

You can probably run 8xAA. CSAA is just as good. Try 16xCSAA and TRAA on. You shouldn't have problems running that on such a low resolution.

I got my card today. It does 700core 1728sp 1040memory.

Crysis @ high dx9 1440x900 37.47 fps. That's almost fast as a 8800gt.

System:
E6300 @ 3.05ghz on Asus p5b vanilla
2 gigs
EVGA 8800gs
vista x86

My core wasn't locked. Does 700 core without bios edit.

What about overclocking it do you guy go up like 20-25mhz at a time or did you take it right up to 650+ to start because it is know that it can run at those speeds?

What about the Shader did you leave it linked with the core clock or did overclock each individually?

I went straight to 680/1700/1000 first then I tested for errors and slowly raise my clocks.

The card is huge like 8800gt though. It blocks your airflow if you have a medium tower. I had to add my custom modded 5volt silent exhaust fan next to the video card to keep it cool. Dropped my vid card temp by 5c.
