The United States should employ air power (bombers and fighters) from outside the country. Ground forces should be limited to airmobile operations and elite, inserted units. The airmobile forces should also be based outside the country.

I had a masterful battle-plan for the battle of Afganistan in one of the other threads. It was a bit similar. Start with special forces who attack bin Ladens camps, and maybe Taleban strongholds. After that, cross the border with 50.000+ men (more if necessary), coordinate your actions with the NA. Drive to Kabul, surround it and neutralise it. After that.... See my above plan.

Iran might get involved in some point. Let them. They are there to fight the Taleban, they are not your enemy.

How many rich kid today would abandon his BMW and his Ivy League education to join up? During World War II, people from all source of background volunteered before they were drafted.

Best to use standoff attacks on Taliban strongholds and depots. We must leave the civilian infrastructure intact. The Russians seriously lacked equipment to fight with an air force at distances beyond 6km to avoid Stinger SAMs. They have since fixed that problem. Fortunately, so have we.

If they do use equipment in Afghanistan then it will likely center on such equipment as AC-130 gunships, warplanes, and attack helicopters. Its pretty futile to send in tanks and ground troops when we have no use for ground control.

I still like the idea of giving (modernization) aid to the civilian population so that the Taliban loses control.

<<Yet the bands of fighters are superbly organized.>>

Yes they were. Who do you think was mostly responsible for their organization? The USA, that's who. We helped train them and arm them. That's where the Stinger missile was tested.
I don't underestimate the Afghans, but we need to remember the big reason why they fought so effectively.

Former Premier Krushchev's son spoke at my college today, he told us that we nuked all of Afghanistan, we'd kill maybe 30 people with each one. It was a funny but scary truth.

Yes, the American arsenal is much more modern than what the Soviets were using, but don't forget that the Afghan arsenal is going to be updated too.

<< "Any big or sustained U.S. military campaign in Afghanistan could collapse
the very delicate stability of the entire region, and spread Islamic revolution to
Pakistan, northern India and the post-Soviet states of central Asia," he said.

this is about the only quote i agreed with. soviet preparation, morale, purpose,
training, and conviction were all wrongheaded. they were fighting for a failed
system of government that was introduced into an islamic tribal world that
practiced a strict wahabbian form of islam - this is what we term 'compounded
stupidity'. soviet failure was inevitable, if not predestined.

You also have to remember that the US was pumping hundreds of millions of dollars into Afghanistan at the time to help fight Russia. That was back when Russia was the world's terror not the Afghany's.

If you catch them out in the open thats the time to hit them.. they can hide all day long in thier holes in the ground but eventually they must come out.. Thermal imaging and satellites will track them. Thats just one of many things. Have you heard of the MLRS rocket system? Its just another tracked vehicle with a 12 pack of rockets that are extremely accurate. It is a very fast and mobile machine as well. Each rocket can go to its destination (long distance) and spin out 600-1200 bomblets over a grid square area 1000 ft x 1000 ft... The Iraqi solders called them steel rain when we used them on them in the Kuwait Liberation... this is just ONE example of many ways to make thier day... When I was in Iraq the soviet tanks they drove were shattered.. turrets would blow off like toys... nothing as powerful and strong as the M1- Abrams which can shoot on the move... Soldiers dont do much hand to hand combat these days... long distance hits are much safer for our troops and effective to force the enemy to surrender quickly.

I would think one of the most effective method would be to provide the northern alliance air support and let them lead the ground attack.

This is disturbing...Afghanistan obviously has the advantage because it is being fought on it's own turf. They got homefield advantage so to speak. We are obviously not going to do very well since we do not know the terrain, plus we are not adapted to the climate. Those are big issues IF we send ground trooops. Air strikes are best as long as they dont' have good AA sites are the country. We could also use missles to attack them from the sea. And bring some of the good old Vietnam War stuff into this, such as Agent Orange and Napalm bombs!
