Yeah, they used to save soldiers with maggots by using them to clean out dead tissue. I also saw a documentary on the medical uses of maggots several years ago; a couple of people were spared amputation because the maggots cleaned the diseased area and healthy tissue eventually grew back.

You'd think otherwise if you had non-healing wounds for one reason or another. Maggots have proven quite effective at stimulating new growth in those cases.

I think the soliders in WWII used it on the field to fix wounds..
I know its nasty.. but I saw this original article about 10 years ago on the BBC.

You are correct. The native americans also used maggots for the same purpose.

Previously, patients could obtain sterile maggots only from certain hospitals and research centers.

Maggots are my most hated insect of all. That scene in Gladiator where the guy puts maggots in his shoulder wound to clean it? Yeah, I have nightmares about that. I'd rather die than put a maggot in my body.

I saw a documentary on this as well. I just can't remember if it was on Discovery or TLC. If it was a choice of getting a limb amputated, I will definitely try this.

A) I don't know exactly, but it has probably something to do with smell. Sure, some types do target live tissue, but others will target dead tissue first (as long as it lasts).

B) They wash out the wound at most every 72 hours. Maggot waste is nothing compared to rotting tissue.
