I think it really depends on where you are. Yes.....bratwurst is the way to go, but not always feasible. Stadium brats aren't as good as REAL brats. If I'm at a ballgame, I'll seriously debate the chilidog vs stadium brat based on price alone.

But then there's the hot dog combo at Sam's Club. They have huge Nathan's hot dogs + a 32oz drink for like $1.78. It's the best meal you can get under $2.

The ketchup debate is a waste of time. What's more important is deciding what kind of beer to drink with the dogs or brats.

costco polish > sam's hot dog.

well, that was true until costco switched to pepsi and got rid of iced tea. but costco still has brown mustard and chopped onion.

Yeah Japadog is great, they have an actual store in Vancouver now, on Robson, plus a few dog carts and an actual food truck.

Love the shiro fries, an okonomi or kurobuta terimayo, plus lots of their wasabi mayo of course. So good!

I hate these bullshit hotdog stands.

There was this amazing dinky little stand a few blocks away, in a parking lot across from city council, that sold real Chicago dogs. They did it right, too. No ketchup on premises. They'd look at you funny if you asked for such a thing. It was probably the only such hotdog stand in California, maybe even the west coast.

They shut down some year ago, or got new management, and now it's one of these who-the-fuck knows faux fusion asian-what's it hotdog stands.

because that's a hotdog! not some bullshit fancy crap! Fusion or whathave you has its place, but this push to try and fancify simple, blue color foods that are outright perfect because of what they are is obnoxious.

It started with that Wolfgang Puck asshole, that started trying to make pizza into something fancy. Every where I go down here, it's potatos and avocado on my pizza. what is that noise?

Don't get me wrong, I like fine foods, but I feel that the push to "improve" something that is already perfect in its simplicity, by making it fancy (wagyu beef hotdog?) is anathema to that dish. It is pointless. Just call it something else. Maybe the hipsters won't like it as much, but wgaf?

and yet with reference to the chicago dog, you're eating a hot dog with a bunch of shit on it (in an attempt to improve the base hot dog) instead of a hot dog straight up.

but those are hot dog things. people eat it with saurkraut and mustard, and onions, and peppers. Everyone does this. Or Chilli.

Notice that I'm talking about these high end ingredients--let's make a wagyu beef dog with truffles and saffron!

what the hell is that? that is not comparable to the shitty quality items one includes on a perfect Chicago Dog. Blue color food stuffs beget blue color food stuffs.

wagyu, truffles and saffron and all of that have their place, obviously. But don't call it a hot dog. And don't call it pizza.

When foods like that are on my mind, I can assure you that sourcing, calories, cholesterol, etc, are not on my mind.

What's wrong with offal? Sure, pig offal isn't particularly good, so just go for the 100% beef offal dogs.

I think it's pretty self explanatory actually, how about you tell us what's so great about offal?

I've pissed off family and friends with my avoidance of haggis, but I think I'd still eat that before I would a main stream American hotdog. Not saying hotdogs taste horrible, just that ignorance is bliss.

Now I keep thinking about Bart's school lunches on the Simpsons.

"Grade B meat."

"Mostly circus animals."

Helps to wash it down with some ice cold malk too I bet...

I think I would try one of those kurobuta dogs though. Thems some high quality swine yo.

You eat the bright reds?

I've had it done a korean/chinese way and once a mexican way

korean/chinese prep = spiced and grilled. would not recommend
mexican way = braised and mixed with other meats. tasted like beef tendon. would also not recommend.

sometimes you go for the birria and end up eating pizzle. it happens.

done right, offal is delicious.

I've heard that, just never been able to bring myself to agree with it. I've given it a shot several times. Just can't bring myself to see that stuff on the same level as say, a gigantic, perfectly cooked Kansas City strip.

I've tried sweetbreads and foie gras in upscale European restaurants, the previously mentioned haggis, as well as brains and kidneys in shawarmas (think Arab burrito) and kebabs during my stints in Qatar and Oman. Tuna fishing with my dad involved him immediately cutting out the yellow or blackfins heart and slurping down the still beating thumper with a stupid grin. That was his version of candy. Trust me, the man tried hard for a long time to get me to see guts like he did.

No thanks. Meat please. If chowing down on a big ol plate of pig guts and peppers or whatever floats your boat, more power to ya though.

If it was so good then why isn't it still in business? Personally I think most normal hot dogs are garbage and Chicago style are even worse than having it plain. The only plain hot dogs I'd eat are the deep fried Rippers (I used to live by http://www.yelp.com/biz/rutts-hut-clifton-2) and even then I'm not crazy about them. I like the fusion dogs, not all of them, but I like that at least they're trying to innovate the hot dog game.

quality =/= success.

Only if you're in an area that can't afford to pay for higher quality, but if they built a fusion place in place of the old place then I doubt that was the case.

Most successful places have one or more of the below 3 things going for them:

1. Convenient location
2. Cheap
3. Quality at a fair price
