Anyone else playing this? It's pretty fun but kind of tough. All of the animals seem to be really tough and come at you in groups.

You can make weapons and armor but it doesn't seem to help much. how do you do it?

Is it fun? It looks very intriguing; I kept seeing it pop up on RPS, but never really went to investigate it further. RPS has a way of making anything sound intriguing (that's not a bad thing).

not web based. it can be fun and it can be tedious. I'm kind of stuck now where I need stuff from spiders and other animals but they kick my ass because everything comes at you in a group.

You have to build a fire and be near it to stop that. Cynical Brit did a WTF is Don't Starve video on youtube, explains lots of stuff.

yah its pretty hardcore and shows no mercy.

Spiders should be easy as long as their nest isn't spawning yellow ones. You need to run out of melee when monsters go to strike. Spiders you can usually stun lock and dodge out of the second one (first wandering one generally goes down before they get there). Don't kill nests since they'll spawn more spiders for you. At dusk, nests will generally send out little spiders too and you can generally kill bunches if there's a lot of nests around.

I put about 20 hours into it so far, and liked it alot more when I started than I do now. It is a good game, and I will probably return to it, but it is extremely grind-heavy.

You will die alot, and you will spend the first 20 days doing nearly the exact same thing. Then you'll see a new enemy, and die, and have to do it all over again. Or Winter will catch you unprepared because you haven't seen it before, and you will die. Or a bunch of other things.

However, the atmosphere and mechanics are quite unique and interesting. With health and hunger, you have a sanity meter, and if it falls low, you start seeing things, and items change from what they were to more sinister counterparts. Darkness will kill you, so fire or light is a must at night. The game is from Klei, the same people that made Mark of the Ninja, so the quality is there.

You basically gather things like 3 twigs and 2 logs to make a fire. For a permanent fire pit you need stone. Food is the major issue though, and you will spend ALOT of time picking berries, setting traps, buildings farms, cooking, and trying out recipes in a buildable crockpot.

Then winter comes, and you better have a winter hat and watch out for the winter mobs, which again, will kill you, and you'll be back picking grass again for your first fire in no time.

yeah, very grindy. I've got most of the mechanics down except the killing of things. I try to kite the spiders, but theres so many, like 6 regular ones and 3 yellow ones. there's no way deal with that.

I read you can befriend the pigmen and i did it once but when night came, he turned into a werewolf (werepig?) and attacked me, so it's wtf are you supposed to do?

If all the lairs near you are already spawning yellows when attacked then just fight the spiders that come out looking for food at night. If you don't attack a lair/spider right next to it they come out one at a time. Low level dens just have 3 normal spiders (one that comes out when you step on web and 2 more when you fight near it).

It's been awhile since I played but from what I recall, the were pigs only show up when it's a full moon and if you gave them monster meat to eat. They will generally attack anything so I just keep a spear handy.

You can befriend them by giving them food to eat. And build a little pig hut for them at your main camp for their fertilizer and I think they regenerate(?) from it. On one map I setup near a beefalo herd which gave me enough fertilizer for my farms. Beefalo steaks regenerate a lot of hunger but I remembered that if you make a cooking pot you can add honey to the beef and make honeyed ham or something and it'll regen both HP and hunger. If you just need to regen HP, Honey is the best. To get a hive you need to catch bees which requires gear and the net... So you need to go kill some spiders.

As for the spiders, to get the webs and stuff, you need to camp near the den and at night the spiders come out. They are usually 3 or so and you just kill them easily with a spear and kiting them.

As for the dogs that come out, throw some monster meat on the ground and they'll be distracted.

I last played it 2 months ago so I dunno if they patched anything else.

Started playing this a couple of days back and ive only gotten to 7 days max. Thought I was going pretty smoothly when I realized that it was night and I had no grass for a fire. Overconfidence got me. It's just too frustrating to go back grinding again. But I guess that's the usp foe the game. Looking ro put in more time into it.

Played maybe 90 minutes of this on the PS4.

I won't play again.

The game is interesting, nicely in depth, cool idea. I enjoyed most of the 90 min.

Here are how my games went:

Game 1: 4 days. Attacked something and died
Game 2: 1 day. Made grass armor, forgot enough for fire, died at night.
Game 3: 1 day. Something similar and dumb on my part.
Game 4: 9 days. Everything going well other than his heart meter at 21, but in any case no issues until out of nowhere two beasts of some variety just rushed me out of the blue. Killed one with spear, other killed me. Then back to square one.

Sorry, no. I enjoy the idea of things having repercussions, but a game that both:

1) Surprises you in novel ways of how you're going to die; ways you absolutely couldn't have anticipated
and
2) Makes you then start the entire thing over again

Isn't a great design to me. I think it should have some way to at the most send you back a few days or something like that.

The idea of grinding through it not knowing if some weird animal just totally out of the blue will kill me isn't exciting, it's annoying.

Game had a lot of promise, but it's not for me.

20-30 day range is as far as I got. Freeze to death or attacked by something then have to start over. Daily save points would make this game a win. Having to go back to beginning made me stop playing.

Roguelike inspired games have gotten popular lately, but I can't really enjoy them.

I did get this game free on PSN so I'll try it. But, like Spelunky, I doubt I'll get into it.

I heard about this game and it seemed interesting but at the time I was playing Salem so didn't have the desire to try it. I might try it now though I am a bit hesitant at the comments here

I picked this up in one Steam sale or another and finally got around to trying it this past week. I rather like it, though the combination of roguelike permadeath and relatively long "start up" time for a new game can be harsh. When you die in FTL, even if it was a good run you've probably only been playing for maybe an hour. In Spelunky it's not even that. If you go back to a more traditional roguelike such as Nethack then you can lose a few hours there when you stupidly go look at Medusa (cough), but I never found Nethack to be overly "grindy": you're mostly exploring and doing new things all the time rather than the same thing over and over.

I don't know. I can see why you would get frustrated in Don't Starve. So far I am enjoying it but I don't know how long I will keep playing. My third playthrough I lasted over 20 days, enough to see winter start, though I was teetering on the edge of starvation the whole time. I think I have a better plan now, so I'm excited to start a new game.

I'm kind of sick of how roguelike elements are in all the indie games now. It's like the new puzzle platformer cliche.

So I never played this before but my friends are in the multiplayer beta and gave me a key to it, it's pretty cool. I think the atmosphere and subtle humor are great and the world feels big and wild. I could see it's losing some of it's charm if you get to the "you've done it all" point since the gameplay itself is pretty simple, but for a new player it's quite fun - especially multiplayer since it's a bit more forgiving with someone else there to revive you.

Great games, I was addicted to it for a while. My only gripe was the hounds. Honestly, I just couldn't deal with them. Not to mention the giants in the expansions.

Also, I once had a base next to the beefalo not knows that when they go into heat they destroy everything. My whole base was destroyed.

I played it when it first came out, but at that point I was already sick of the rogue-like craze. Best rogue-like was FTL IMO.

(EDIT: all gone)
I've got 4 Don't Starve Together beta keys if anyone is interested. PM me (1)how many you'd like and (2)why you want them / who you'll be playing with and I'll give them to the most convincing cases. I'll post again when I've given them all away.
