Don't they make RPG games to last anymore?

I remember playing Ultima 6 on a commodore 64 for weeks before finally beating it.

My son plays Kingdom Hearts 2 for - count them - 2 days - and beats a 30$ game.

Oblivion is freaking awesome. I'm still playing it. I stopped doing the main quests because I don't want to beat it, I want to do a bunch of side quests first. I've logged at least 40 hours into the game and there is no end in sight.

Oblivion disappointed me, although younger people do tend to enjoy it...

Neverwinter Nights 2 is great, but not sure if it's on PS2.

I second that - Oblivion rocks!

I've spent about 60 hours doing all sorts of non-main quests. I love this game, it goes for a long, long time. And they haven't even released expansions yet!

Same here. I thought the main quest for Oblivion was way too short. Side Quests are fun and all, but I want the main "beef" of the game to be long.

i wish it had a traditional leveling system. i hated oblivion's system. good story though:thumbsup:

People have shorter attention span now.

Also in the early days of CRPGs, you had to beat the game on your own. No Gamefaqs, no game guides, no internet websites.

I remember spending my entire summer playing games like Wizard's Crown, Moebius, and Pool of Radiance on my C64. Those were the days.

For the PS2, Final Fantasy XII is a fantastic RPG and long one too, I put in about 75ish hours and I didnt complete all the side stuff

PS2 is loaded with good long rpgs, Dragon Quest VIII is another great and long one

I think it more so has to do with $$$.

With people expecting elaborate 3D worlds it isn't very easy or cheap to produce vast and "never-ending" quests.

Also, if you can get people fork over $50 a pop for 3 games that take as long as 1 longer game, well you can make more money obviously.

I've heard the new Zelda game on the Wii is very long, and I'm sure the new final fantasy is very long, too.

edit: for PS2 get Chrono Cross. It's a PS1 game, but one of my favorite RPG's, it's not as difficult as some of the other JRPG's, but still challenging. Good story, lots of twists, and very very long.

It took me about 24 hours to beat Zelda. I also did all of the side quests.

oblivion is a pretty much never ending game. i admit that i gave up. there's a ton of sidequests. if you just do the main quests you'll finish the game pretty fast. otherwise, it can take hours upon hours to beat it. Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2 also took me about 90 hours to beat.

Elder Scrolls Morrowind/Oblivion both can last a very long time.
I'm playing Final Fantasy XII right now, I think it takes around 60+ hrs depending on how you play.

I had over 200 hours into Oblivion, but then a crappy driver took out the registry and crashed my system Ask Appoin about his Oblivion experiances

If you finish all the side quests, FF XII can take over 80 hours. It might be a little confusing for your son, though.

Oblivion was such a let down for me. I'm a fan of the Elder Scrolls series, so naturally I bought into all the hype for Oblivion. It did have a lot of improvements from Morrowind, but it had to many major downfalls for me too However, no TES games are on the PS2, so its moot in this thread

I suggest final fantasy games. Final Fantasy XII is suppose to be long. I have 20 hours in and am barely in the story. Final Fantasy X, though old, was enjoyable, and i spent 100+ hourson that doing all the extra crap. However, the main story really on takes around 30-35 hours to complete.

Okami is a great and long PS2 game, but it is more of an actoin/adventure game like Zelda than an RPG. It took me approximately 58 hours.

If he isn't a stickler about graphics there are plenty PSx JRPGs that are great, such as the final fantasies and Legend of Dragoon.

There are plenty of them. You just have to research
