That game rocked so hard it hurt!

You mean Fallout 1 and 2?

Hehehe, yeah. Fallout 1&2 were also great games. Do you know of any other recent games like that?

I didn't actually play it, but my friend said Suikoden III had about a billion and a half gameplay hours.

Disgaea 1 and 2 are 2 of the longest games I have ever played with no exceptions. Each game is easily 100+ hours, with not even finishing all of the side quests.

Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne is a good 60+ hour game.

Xenosaga Episode 3 is another 40+ hour game, same with DQ8.

Also, does your son simply play through the games, or does he take the time to explore the side quests and optional things?

Bethesda has just purchased the rights to Fallout, which means Fallout 3.

If Bethesda are developing the title it will probably get released for some consoles too.

OK... while we're on the subject of RPGs I have a side question to ask...

I haven't played an RPG since Final Fantasy 2 or 3 ( I don't remember ) on the original Nintendo (or maybe Genesis)...

Anyways... are RPGs (and specifically the newer Final Fantasys) pretty much still a linear type game where you are told where to go and what to do, along the way encounter the occasional enemy to battle (where you mindlessly choose the "Ball of Fire" spell over and over)?

At least, that's how I remember them being... have they changed much? I keep hearing people rave about the latest Final Fantasy and keep wondering what makes it better or different from the first 10?

I miss the days of the original Zelda, which was an RPG of sorts but you had to think, solve riddles, and occasionally get lucky to succeed...

FF12 took me 40 hours only did maybe 10% of the side quests. The battle system got repetitive after you set up all your gambit properly

I got Dragonquest VIII for $20 and I've put 126 hours into it now. Needless to say it's kept me occupied!

I've heard the new Zelda game on the Wii is very long, and I'm sure the new final fantasy is very long, too.

It took me about 24 hours to beat Zelda. I also did all of the side quests.

well, hello mr fancy pants. did you happen to have a walkthrough when you did that?

Didn't it take the developers 30+ hours to beat it and all the side quests skipping through the video scenes?

Final Fantasy series are always very well made, whether you like it is up to you. The current FFXII is a easy 60 hours of play. I wouldn't recommend it for someone too young though. Its a bit challenging, especially the side quests which can be horrendous if you dont refer to some guides or forums. Some side quest events are so freakin obscure that I am shcoked they even find out how to do some of the things. (like the bazaar turn ins, marks that require very very specific conditions to spawn, etc). If you are a real completion nut like me, a 60 hour RPG can take double that time.

Ultimately we play RPGs mostly for story and the style of play. FFXII has a great story (by most people's assesment) and pretty enjoyable style of play. It also has the best CGI and graphics of possibly any PS2 game out there (no suprise being FF and square).

the newer final fantasy games seem to be even more linear than the older ones. hell, they seem to be more movies that you watch and then play the game for a few minutes and then watch more movies.

I stopped at 90 hours... I never finished beating the super dragon lord guy. Beat the boss, though.
