I see that I can flash from a cd with EZ flash, but it doesn't show the option of saving the previous bios. How do I do that?

You can download a copy to from asus. I wouldn't flash unless it's absolutely needed to upgrade and definitely not if I didnt have a backup pc or at least something available to work from.

Not sure if this is the right thread; any assistance or direction to the proper (new?) thread appreciated.

Just got a P5B/E6300 off craigslist and I'd like to swap it out with my ECS/E6750. That is, I want to use the Asus mobo with the faster processor. I'm anticipating needing to update the bios as Asus' site indicates 1604 is the first bios to support this cpu.

Anyone used the 1604, 1705, and/or 1803 (newest)? I plan to use the 1803 unless someone has experience with it and thinks it sucks. TIA.

I have no experience w/ those bios but I wouldn't hesitate to flash to the newest w/ the 6300 in the board then swap chips. I haven't flashed since I got my commando back. I'm admittedly gun-shy now but only because I haven't used the EZ flash yet. AFUDOS won't fly w/ the newer bios that won't fit the floppy so you need to use a usb drive. Just don't flash in windows!

OK, cool, thanks. yeah, the first bios I ever flashed went bad and munched the board, so I've always been nervous about it. Thanks for the advice!

ez-flash (if thats the name for it in windows - i dont remember its been a while since i flashed my p5w dh deluxe bios) has always worked for me. no issues...

but i really prefer the usb drive/floppy method. SO much more reliable....

I've used the Windows flash program multiple times with zero problems. I just made sure there were no other processes running. And crossed my fingers.

But yes, I think I will stick with the flash stick update from now on. It's easier, and just *feels safer.

In any case, you can only be lucky so many times.

EZ-Flash is from the bios, Check the first few posts here, rgallant has made some helpful posts. Download the latest manual for your board and print the pertinent pages, I find having hard-copy in hand a good thing.

EZ Flash (USB method) worked like a champ and easier than floppies. Thanks WoodButcher and others!

Another tip I would throw out there, is if your bios is socketed, go ahead and pick up a spare bios chip when you have some extra cash.
I've seen them go for as little a 6.00 on ebay sometimes.
Better to have a spare if something goes wrong and not have to wait to locate a replacement.
