I've seen them in HK, Seoul and Tokyo, they have both a mixture of clock counters or binary light indicators and they seem to work pretty well both as a pedestrian and as a driver.

As a pedestrian you know you have x seconds left to cross or until you can cross, as a driver you know you have x seconds before it changes to green / red. I think it cuts out allot of the frustration.

If it was truly that then those lights should be replaced as they are faulty, it should be:

Green
Amber
Red
Red + Amber
Green

Just amber is to indicate that lights are turning red and you should stop, red+amber would indicate that the lights are turning green and you should get ready to go.

Since I prefer to arrive vs. being delivered to the ER or morgue, and knowing the prepencity of people that are the most important asses on the road to run lights after they turn red, because they are in a hurry and stupid, I usually wait until someone behind me blows their horn before I pull away from an intersection.

I've seen people that hammer it as soon as the light turns green get hammered by someone running a redlight, but only as a spectator.

The timers are great but there are many asshole drivers who invade the crosswalk or are too busy on the phone to know what is going on.

i just look at the opposite light. 3 seconds after it turns red is usually when mine turns green.

OP hasn't figured that out yet.
He's not old enough to drive.
