I hope you're young. Anyway, I never knew that Rose Kennedy was the way she was because of a labotomy.

As they say, I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal labotomy.

They used to do all kinds of freaky stuff to "cure" people. Insulin shock therapy, electroshock, lobotomies etc.

at one point, lobotomies were performed by driving a spike up through the eye socket (or was it the nasal cavity?). anyway, they showed a picture of this in one of my psych classes and it made some guy so nauseated that he had to leave during the lecture (and hurled on his way to the door). I remember this because a friend of mine was in the class as well and she commented on how i could possibly be enjoying a snickers bar at the moment.

*edit*
Ah, here we go (from article in OP):
Freeman, without the support of Watts, later developed a version that reached frontal lobe tissue through the tear ducts. In his trans-orbital lobotomy, a mallet is used to pound and force a surgical instrument akin to an ice pick through the thin layer of skull at the top of the eye socket. The pick is then wiggled to damage the frontal lobe.

I don't understand why they thought it was a medical procedure... they knew they were simply destroying brain tissue at random.

You need to read One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. You'll be thoroughly disturbed by all of the "cures" mental institutions tried on their patients.

I knew what they were, but I had no idea they were still being done so recently.

The Nobel prize less than 60 years ago was for this?

A few months back I did a bunch of research into all that just out of curiosity. It's disgusting what they let happen. And what goes on even today. I look at murcury fillings in the same light. And many other things they do now adays. They pretty much do lombotomys today by throwing pills down your throat. All those meds out there do more harm than good in a lot of people.

lobotomy, people.
Moniz won the Nobel Prize for medicine in 1949 for this work....In 1950 lobotomy was banned in the Soviet Union.
Interesting politics there. Must be one of the few times the USSR was ahead of the West on human rights/patient protection.

Freeman advocated this procedure for patients with even fairly mild symptoms. He personally performed the operation on thousands of people and promoted the idea of lobotomy as a casual procedure, claiming it would one day be as common as dental work....
A trained doctor thought that destroying healthy brain tissue for no reason was a good idea? Scary.

The scary thing is that sometimes it DID work, you can actually be fully functional with half of your brain gone. Of course they were doing it pretty much at random. The same type of things still go on now, for instance people with bad seizures can undergo a treatment where a scan is performed to determine what areas of the brain are hyperactive during the seizure and then they insert a metal rob with a heating element into your brain and fry those parts so they die and you have less seizures.

EDIT: though not as widespread these days many of these procedures are still done, I know for a fact electroshock is still performed on people with severe depression.

If you want to see something freaky, look up the Soviet research into animated severed dog heads.

The idea behind a lobotomy was the same behind chemotherapy. Kill a bunch to get rid of the bad parts and hopefully the good parts will rebuild. But in the case of most of them, the idea was to simply remove the problem areas. It's kind of like using a game genie with random codes.

This is what happens now that we no longer have educational television shows like Planet of the Apes.
