Doom 3 $44.99 @ Circuit City (Friday, Aug. 6)

So this is, what, the fourth or fifth person to say that the game isn't that great? I'm starting to think maybe I should wait a bit before jumpiing in. See what the reviews say and let friends get and play it first.

well... yeah....

I dunno just in the spirit of it's doom...

And I have not finished the game so I can't really say Ya or Na yet... So I can't give a complete review. I think activision got into the mix of the game and maybe watered it down a bit?

I know a lot of folks that didn't like FARCRY and I did. But the game is playable. To me there is no WOW factor. But of course I have not finished it yet. I'll find it interesting to see how others rate this game.

I think I will play it to the end it's not that boring. But the logs are a bit too much. I'm not going to read them just to find more weapons and humans. Tho, the ROBOT guide is pretty slick.

I am still looking forward to playing it and I have not seen anyone comment that it sucks but from some of the reviews and comments I have seen it seems that the gameplay isn't going to be everyone's favorite.

I played for a couple hours last night with all the lights out and headphones on. I think thats really the only way to play it. You can hear all of the sounds in the background much clearer that.

Finally picked a copy up. This game is great. The graphics are very, very nice but they haven't quite blown me away, I guess because I've seen them a hundred times in magazines and such. The environment, trick with lighting and sounds put this game in another class though. There is so much that keeps you on your toes. There's all of these eerie machinerie sounds and steam and tons of other things that keep on making me spin around with my flashlight looking for ghosts and then when I do figure that I'm safe, some little bastard jumps me from a hidden closet. I tried it with 5.1 speakers and stereo headphones. I have to say that I like the headphones more, it's just more immersive. Uh, didn't quite mean to write a mini-review, just adding my .02

Here's the question: Can I PM CC and then apply a $5 off BestBuy coupon off the PM ?

I've tried to use a GGC with a pricematch and was denied before. My plan for Doom3 tmrw: to use the GGC to get it for $50 then go back to BB when I know CC has it in stock and get the $10 difference off the original $55 price bringing it to $40. Most likely they'll only go to $45 but technically they should take $10 off their original price, we'll see.

The main problem is CC's stock of games(around here at least) is always a joke, hopefully for Doom3 they'll have a lil more foresight

The coupon most likely will not work. I tried it once with a Gameboy Game (PM & Coupon), and they made me choose. But you might find a new worker, and get both to go. GL.

Oh, and my impressions of the game so far are very good. I love the environmental effects -- the way they use lights & sound together are amazing. It creates a very immersive atmosphere. I've gotten scared many a time so far but just sounds and a dark room. I mean it is a great experience I haven't felt since Resident Evil on the PS1. It isn't the most revolutionary game on earth, but it's fun and exciting (except for reading logs :frown. Oh, don't bother with reviews, you gotta just try it. Find friends or something, and just TRY it. That will give you what you need to know. I can't wait to see the rest of this game and the mods that will come, as well as the many games that will use this engine.

I already have it (wink wink), but I'm still going to buy it from CC this Friday. BB is too far away and they hire snot-nosed kids there, so it's not worth saving another $5 to PM it.

I really like the game so far. The mechanic w/ flashlight and gun is cool, I don't see what the problem is. It just adds more tense moments. For those that don't know, Hit F to enable your flashlight, and then hit F again to go back to your weapon. This is vital!!. If you're trying to go between your guns and your flashlight w/ a mousewheel or something, you're just crazy. As for performance the best advice I can offer is: Your year old 128MB video card runs in medium quality, your 64MB card runs in low quality. Accept it. I wanted my 9700 Pro to do High so bad, but the game just isn't built that way. As far as I'm concerned, any speed complaints are from people that are trying to run it in a quality that isn't meant for their hardware.

I disagree with the poster that said Far Cry looks better. While the outdoors environments are beautiful in Far Cry, the indoor environments are only ok, and the "pink beast" models in Far Cry were just awful. Overall Doom 3 has way more atmosphere--Be that from lighting, from video screens playing in the background, or computers that you use, sparks showering down, or a fire, that has realistic smoke pouring off of it, the dust floating in your flashlight beam. Oh, did I mention the incredible animations of these creatures breaking through walls and doors, ceilings and floors?

I was very skeptical of Doom3, I sort of accepted that id would make another beautiful, shallow game, but the game has really impressed me so far.

I just called the BB closest to me and the guy said that they have not even received it yet but it's due in today and they would put it on shelves this afternoon. I asked him "You mean, your store hasn't actually received the shipment??" and he swore that the truck has not delivered it yet. But he told me they are expecting 212 copies today and to call back around 2:30pm to see if it's on shelves yet.

I called another local BB (University) and it's ON THE SHELVES right now! A little out of my way but I'm heading over there at lunch to grab a copy and then will PM when CC gets their copies in.

I'm in Charlotte, NC by the way.

Dumb question here (never took advantage of their policy) but shouldn't I be able to just take the Circuit City flyer into Best Buy, buy Doom 3 and then go directly from the cash register with receipt/flyer, over to the customer service desk and get the refund on the spot? That would bring my grand total (with NC tax) to $43.53. Not too shabby if they stand by this policy.

Also, can someone provide a link (if there is one) to where you got that Best Buy disclaimer? Thanks!

If Circuit City has it in stock the day you buy it at Best Buy (that would be Friday) then of course you get the discount right then at the customer service counter.

I got mine last night at the midnight sale in Plano, TX. They had 444 copies when they started, and 40 were left after the event. I am guessing those will all be gone early today. The Doom3 dev team was on hand to autograph people's boxes as they came out of the store. Pretty f'ing cool.

Hmm, I didn't bother with the PM at time of purchase. I will do it on friday. I picked it up today @BB (Humble, TX). Their doom3 display is over by furniture (strange I know....).

Just got my copy at BB as well but I didn't have the CC flyer with me. Guess I'll just go back this weekend and get the refund.

Was pretty funny though because when I walked into BB, an employee was literally standing right inside the front door handing out copies to virtually every guy that walked in. People were just walking in, grabbing a copy from him and heading straight over to checkout. The other employees were all laughing at the process. Oh well...no shame here in being a gaming nerd. :laugh:
