Doom 3 and Expansion

Played through Doom 3 and the Doom 3 expansion recently, i didn't like them much. Pretty boring. I'd say both are pretty bad games. Remind me of the Metroid Prime games, which i also thought were boring, but still, much better than these Doom games. Just going room to room, more monsters spawn, kill monsters, hit some bittons here and there, repeat, and that's the game. They weren't horrible games, or else i wouldn't of bothered to play through them, but i guess they were good to kill some time. If i had anything better to do i probably wouldn't of bothered to finish either of them. Both the endings were bad and there were no interesting characters (would it be so bad to have the main character speak in one of the games, you know, give him a personality of some sort instead of just being a lifeless drone?) I guess they were trying to be true to the original games or something *shrug*. That's not a big gripe i had with the game though.

I'm kinda curious to see what others thought of Doom 3 and Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil. I know the games were both hyped pretty high, but i didn't have any expectations before playing them. I've never played Doom games before these. They was not anything special about these games, nothing unique at all, same old FPS formula. I don't think these games deserve to be compared to say...Half Life 2, which was much, much better in my opinion.

Anyways, i got these games off my "To play" list, so time to uninstall and try to forget about them. Still curious to see what other's think about these games though, hope i'm not the only one that disliked them a lot.

Doom3 was excellent, albeit repetitive. The CO-OP play via Last Man Standing mod is some of the best CO-OP in awhile, considering how rare it is these days. The expansion is significantly more difficult and squashes some of the reptition.

Metroid Prime, on the other hand, is one of the best single player FPS games to ever grace the genre.

Seeing what even mod'ders can do, I was then a little disappointed with the maps in D3.


D3 - In hell is a good mod to download if you are interested.

I enjoyed the game and the expansion immensely and I hope there are more expansions to come in the future. :thumbsup:

You going to review Starcraft for us next week? I mean, if you were honestly curious about the game, how could you miss all the discussion about it? Anyhow, yes, it was a fair-to-weak game.

I did not like Doom 3 all that much. I picked it back up this spring and finished it and then played through the expansion, which I liked much more because of the "grabber" and other weapons.. but still it doesn't compare to other fps games I've played.

I did not like the fact that I had to switch out for a flashlight or turn around every few seconds because a beast was spawning up behind me.. that got old really fast. I ended up getting the duct-tape mod for the guns and played through like that.

I would like to play the mod which allows you to play the original Doom game but with the new graphics.. should play and look pretty well.

I liked Quake 4 much more than Doom 3 though (same engine) and finished that before going back to Doom 3.. hehe I had to get Doom3 off of my machine and I wanted to finish the game/expansion first.

They were boring games, everything besides the boss battles was just boring, killing regular foes was not fun at all. I didn't even finish the second one i got so tired of going back and forth doing stupid tasks and fighting the same respawning enemies over and over again. If the games didn't have Metroid in the title people wouldn't have liked them nearly as much, that's my feeling. Just because it's Nintendo and Metroid people are willing to forget that the Metroid Prime games just aren't much fun. I'm a big Nintendo fan, loved Super Metroid and the GBA Metroid games. I just didn't like the Prime series though.

Anyhow, back to Doom. I guess i missed out on the multiplayer part of the game, so i have no comments about that.

Thats what I was thinking.
Doom 3 and all of its threads were old news a long time ago.

I hope the OP didnt throw away too much money on a game he didnt like.
There must of been hundreds of reviews and thousands of threads all over the internet dedicated to just that one game.

I did get bored of Prime 2, it was too much the same game as Prime. However, I was very impressed to see Metroid transition to 3D and still keep much of the feel of the series.

I believe Prime 3 is a launch title for the Wii? Christmas will be early for me!

i liked metroid prime. though i ALWAYS hated the fact that you have to regain your weapons. so goddamn irritating.

and doom3 and doom3 exp were good as well, just switching to the flashlight always annoyed me, and i got random headaches while playing too...

I got to Delta labs or something and then quit. Boring game. I'll look up this Last Man Standing mod, Co-op can make any game fun, even PDZ.

Doom has always been a boring series. The only reason the game was hyped was because of it's graphics and because alot of people get warm tingly feelings when hearig about Doom cause when it first came out it was so new no one cared that it sucked much like pong. Anyways Doom3 ftl imo.

EDIT: I agree with the OP post on topic or don't post. WTF do I want to read through 50% "Why did you post this?"posts, seriously. if you don't like it don't waste either of our time.

To respond to the OP: I thought Doom 3 was solid, but not my cup of tea. I'm not into the whole "walk past a certain point, a monster spawns behind you".

Metroid Prime: I thought the transition to 3D was decent, those two games are the target of my biggest game rant ever; you can't f-ing STRAFE! I couldn't get past that fact, and I just couldn't play it. Yeah, I know... I suck and I missed out on two great games. But I honestly couldn't help it. It made my character feel like she running through jello. I know it was an "adventure" game, but not being able to move side to side killed it for me. Oh well, at least Super Metroid is still one of the greatest games ever to me.

Once again you are behind the times.
Nobody is allowed to create any new Oblivion Threads. So your alternative idea is no good either.

I do agree wholeheartedly on Doom3 though.
WAAAYYY too repetative. No real variety until the very last level (Hell or whatever it was). And it wasnt even as fun as Doom 1 and 2 or Quake 1 and 2.
It had much slower action, none of the good monster fests like the earlier games.
You have to turn about 6 corners to find a single new enemy and even then it always seemed to pop out of the same place. The first time I encountered a pink demon I was hoping the game might change its pace, but it didnt.

By about half way through I got tired and left it for a month. It was sheer boredom that made me go back and slog through the last half. The final level was good but not nearly enough to make up for a rotten game. I think John Carmack finally forgot that the number one priority in video games is FUN, graphics and sound come after that.
I guess it isnt suprising that he would go down the dark path of commercialism.
Those guys were so much better when they worked out of their basements.

For those of you who wonder how I can be so critical: Its because I have a dozen other good shooters to make comparisons and contrasts.
Far Cry had an interesting assortment of weapons, environments, enemies and mission objectives.
Same for Half Life 2. While it wasnt quite as impressive as all the hype, it still offered much more than Doom 3. My only beef was with the required use of Steam and after all this time I finally managed to get over that.
FEAR actually turned out to be a little scary, though nothing like Alien Vs Predator 2. But it did have good variety in play, almost as good as Far Cry.
Even older games seem more playable than Doom 3. Return to Castle Wolfenstein was fun. So at that point ID still knew how to make games. Same likeable features.
Variety in the gameplay, the enemies and the equipment.
Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy were a nice break from the usual. I just keep hoping they make a new game with a new engine.
Max Payne 2 was a lot of fun. True, all the levels were set in night time, but it still offered a lot more than Doom 3.

I'd have to say Doom3 rocked. For FPS , the engine revolutionized / revitalized the FPS genre...Playing the game in my office on my LCD projector , running full surround....woa..I only played at night , and it made me wonder....what was that noise???

Metroid Prime / Metroid Prime - Echoes are the only reasons I will keep my GameCube. My save files for Prime with 100% completion , and almost 100% in hard mode , to unlock the original Metroid.....Echoes was very similar , but continued on past where we left off in Prime...so I thought it was great to make the transition ,and keep the play identical.
Can't wait to see what comes from the Wii....
