Folks, I loved Doom 3 when it came out in 2004 and still think it is a benchmark for other games. Many effects and ideas I personally saw first in D3 show up in newer games, like PDAs, audio recordings and premonitions/ghost images. I thought the story, the game play and the creepy, moody lighting and sound effects made it a lot of fun and engrossing.

If you never got a chance to play it, Steam has it for 10 bucks. http://store.steampowered.com/app/9050/

There is also a BFG edition that came out last year that has ALL the Doom games! 20 bucks. http://store.steampowered.com/app/208200/

"DOOM 3 BFG Edition is the ultimate collection of games that defined the first person shooter including DOOM, DOOM II, DOOM 3, and DOOM 3: Resurrection of Evil, and The Lost Mission. Key features: A Classic Remastered: Developed by id Software, the original team responsible for the franchise legacy, DOOM 3 BFG Edition features Steam... "

Who else thinks its a great game and what others do you think maybe edge it out in its catagory?

Doom 3 was a decent game and it was scary to a degree although it liked using the same tricks again and again to try and scare you. I would say the better scary sci fi FPSs would be Dead Space 1 & 2 along with System Shock 1 & 2.

I like Doom 3 a lot.

I think the first time I played Dead Space 1 might edge it out though. I knew nothing about it and had no idea what to expect. I think I played through it in just two days. Such a great experience.

That is what makes Dead Space 3 such a bummer. It was essentially doomed (no pun intended) from the start because we already know the formula going into it.

I just replayed Doom 3 in the last 6 months. It is still a great game and I think the graphics are still decent.

FEAR. Now that game made me jump back a few times. Doom 3 was pretty neat, it got repetitive though.

It was a good game if you knew what to expect, it's a fairly traditional corridor shooter with an array of satisfying weapons to use, some good scares primarily based on making you jump, some great atmospherics in places and a shadow system that at the time was 2nd to none.

If you can find it for cheap I'd recommend it.

There are so many better scary FPSs it's not even funny. Constantly spawning enemies behind you and making seeing/shooting anything extremely unwieldy with clunky game mechanics is neither good game design nor particularly scary beyond the "jump" factor to it. Deadspace for instance had some jump scares (fairly rarely), but that wasn't the core part of what made the game scary.

System Shock did everything you first saw in Doom 3 but 10 years earlier.

That's your opinion. I like Doom 3 better.

The majority of what I said was not opinion.

You said there are so many better scary FPS's that it's not even funny.

That's your opinion. I don't care about the rest.

Also most of what you said you finalized with an opinion. 'better', 'clunky', 'not good game design', 'nor particularly scary'.

Yeah I'd say your post had plenty of opinion in it.

Lol, so you don't care about facts. Clunky is clunky. You can't deny that the flipping flashlight mechanic was clunky. That it relied on jump scares is fact. That you find them acceptable as scary/me not is opinion, but as I said the majority of what was said was fact and just saying "hey man opinion" as a response isn't really a response at all.

You responded to one thing I said...the clunkiness. It didn't bother me and I didn't find it clunky. The rest you didn't respond to, because it was opinion. Not sure why you can't see that.

You didn't respond to the majority of my first post either.

Because I was stating that your opinion doesn't make a game better than the other. I don't need to dissect each point when they're OPINION. You then said that most of it wasn't opinion, which it clearly was. Are you stupid?

I stated the facts my opinions were based on. You stated "lalala opinion," and you're questioning my intelligence?

the flashlight thing absolutely KILLED me too! however, I still enjoyed the game quite a bit. can't really remember it being too scary though. Doom was one of my early pc games too so the nostalgia factor was extremely high

Most of what you stated are not facts. I have already explained this. But I'll do it again because you seem to be slow.

1. There are so many better scary FPSs it's not even funny. YOUR opinion
2. Constantly spawning enemies behind you and making seeing/shooting anything extremely unwieldy - Fact
3. is neither good game design nor particularly scary beyond the "jump" factor to it - YOUR opinion
4. clunky game mechanics - YOUR opinion

The rest had nothing to do with Doom 3 as you were talking about other games.

I then responded with 'that's your opinion', because I don't find there to be 'so many better scary FPSs', and I also don't believe that the game design that you described is 'bad' or 'not scary' as you described in #3.

You then said the majority of what you said was not opinion, which is incorrect.

The rest of the interactions between us was just pointless drivel as you can't seem to comprehend that other people's opinions aren't the same as yours.

My head hurts conversing with you, good bye!

You seemed to fail to realize in almost every statement I made I used facts to justify them. That you had a different opinion despite or because of them is fine. Man, you're slow as hell. Clunky game mechanic is not arguable btw. That you could tolerate it is your trait and shaped your opinion, but that doesn't change the fact.

I didn't really like doom 3. The flashlight thing was annoying and it was wash rinse repeat with rooms. Walk in a dark room, get attacked from behind, shoot anything that moved, pick up ammo and health from the corner, move to next room.

While I thoroughly enjoyed D3 when it first came out, in retrospect, the game brought NOTHING new to the FPS genre and actually used elements from other games in a crappier way.

I'm replaying Unreal Gold now and I never realized how original it was. It combined corridor shooting with great outdoor landscapes, why couldn't Doom do that?

Remember this part?

Doom 3 was a step back in many ways. It just turned into an interactive movie rather than a video game. I got better things to do than listen to PDAs of bad voice actors to find ammo and health in the game. Give me a puzzle, challenge me mentally...don't challenge my attention span.

Doom 3 tried too hard to be scary. You know the kid on the block that used to go the extra mile to be liked and it was extremely transparent? That's what Doom 3 is like, that stupid kid on the block.
