FEAR was very well done, but I didn't find it especially scary. And I'm not convinced the plot ever really made sense.

I thought the original made sense. In the the second game they totally threw it out the window.

I still think the first FEAR is one of the scariest FPS games. I liked the weird storyline and I think with FEAR and it's expansions it sort of kind of made sense, it at least felt like it was going somewhere that it would all make sense. But then FEAR 2 and 3 came along...meh.

I liked Doom 3 a lot.

is it perfect? no.

does it have issues? yes.

was it fun? yes.

was it the scariest game ever? no.

It was a decent game with very good graphics and effects for its time. It creeped me out and I enjoyed the game.

For atmosphere, art direction and story I would rather play Bioshock.

I played a friend's copy back when it came out. I was bored within 5 minutes and barely played it at all. Yawn.

doom3 - as said before - wasn't a doom game.

in doom 1/2, you get :

awesome weapons of awesomeness.
TONS of mobs
empty space to strafe in.
and the epic 3d maps.

in doom3 you get:
meh guns.
2-3 mobs at the time, ALWAYS popping out of a closet/wall/storage/ other blatant "im hiding here" place.
tiny corridors.
linear maps.

maybe, if i wasn't so busy thinking how terrible the game was, i would have noticed if it was scary or not, but i didn't.

I agree that it may not have been the scariest game....but it was still good in my book....nice shooting mechanic, if you love that kind of thing.

I was just sort of posting screens of the mods and such...as it really does still look cool for an old game.....and it makes the game worth another playthru.....IF you like the game, itself.

Here are a few more screens.

Are there mods that can be used in conjunction with BFG edition to make it look even better?

Played it for the first time half a year ago. It was good enough to play through, but it wouldn't make my best games ever list. I'd also say Stalker and FEAR are scarier/better.

Maybe the shadows were interesting for the time, but they aren't good by any stretch of the imagination. In real life, shadows aren't completely black. Holding your hand a foot over a piece of paper, so the paper is in the shadow, isn't going to make it so you can't even tell the paper is there.

Also, it was a bit annoying how they made a limitation of the game engine (ridiculously bad shadows) central to the "scare" mechanic (enemies are hiding in the shadows, in a lit room).

I think I'm in a small minority in having liked Doom 3!

May be partly 'cos I never played the earlier Dooms, so don't care that it didn't involve large numbers of enemies at a time (isn't that Serious Sam's job? or Painkiller?).

And it wasn't a sophisticated shooter, but I just liked the creepy atmosphere and solid feeling game engine.

Wouldn't mind playing the 'new' (if partly recycled) mission pack, but not if it means buying the BFG version (overpriced and no dynamic lighting??) to do so.

Not everyone likes the same stuff. Who cares what other people think?

I have never played doom 3 because when I bought it from c.e.x. I tried to install it the n realised it was an expansion pack and c.e.x. had put the price sticker over that fact. (they do that a lot to get shot of them).

Dead Space was seriously scary, but I agree on the PC the controls were amazingly bad and clunky.

i thought it became pretty predictable. eventually it was "oh i know which enemy is going to pop out, and i know i'll be able to wreck him"

Sorry, but I don't quite understand how this relates to what I said.

I was merely mentioning I liked the game, and musing that maybe people who loved the original Doom were expecting something from Doom 3 that new-comers to the game weren't.

Don't think I said anything about 'caring' what people think about it or expecting everyone to like the same stuff. It's only a game!

I remember playing Doom 3 when it first came out in the dark at 2am. I was about to come up to some electricity boss and right when the thing jumped at me the power went out. Scared the shit out of me until I realized what happened.
