Yes, it's repetitive and linear, but we'll let that slide as the experience calls for little else. The gameplay is identical to the original, level design, also, very similar. Again, that's what Doom is allegedly about.

However, that gripe aside, what are these demons doing hiding in closets?

Should they be collecting pokemon?

You found my butlers.

I ponder, how do chicks look with the D3 engine? Is there a chick on mars?

Add me to the "not very impressed" category. This game is far too easy. I don't know why id insisted on putting a medpack every few steps. Monster AI is bad as well.

well i bought the game . . . anyway . . . no real expectations (i never played the original)

ANd . . . it is BORING.

not "scary" not "creepY"

OTOH, Thiefeadly Shadows IS "Creepy" and "SCARY" with palpable ATMOSPHERE that (IMO) Doom III lacks . . . the PDAs aren't that "bad" although they are "distracting".

And i STILL can't find the Duct Tape to use with my machinegun.

HOWEVER(!) the Graphics are AWEsome . . .

finally, I'd MUCH rather have a game with ordinary "good" graphics (Thief III) and SUPERB gameplay than a game with "superb" graphics and mundane gameplay (Doom III).

Of course, it's only been an hour, but i have the premonition that i have already "been there and done that" (and i have the t-shirt to prove it)

anyway, i will try a bit longer . . . put Doom away and finish Thief (it is SO much better of a story and "clever" to boot)

I'm probably the only person on this planet who never played the first two Dooms (well, for much longer than 5 minutes or so), and I am also one of the few people who didn't get hyped about this game until about a week before it came out. Even then, I use the word hype loosely. And I can honestly say that I thoroughly enjoy this game. The darkness is indeed annoying, but like somebody else mentioned, what do you expect? Baddies don't have too many places to hide in indoor areas except shadowy places. I think it is meant to annoy you a bit purposely anyway. So I really have no other gripes. It's a shame so many of you ruined it with the hype, because I'm having fun.

As a casual gamer who will occasionally really get into a title if it is particularly addictive, I have to say I am somewhat let down by DOOM 3. I was not expecting a simulator, nor an RPG; in fact, just the opposite. I was expecting something akin to the original two games... that is, lots of fast-paced action and rapid discharging of the ammo. What I got, it seems, is not so fast-paced, but more of a "creep along until another one jumps out at you" kind of deal. The PDA system is innovative, but doesn't do a lot for me in practice.

I downloaded a copy to "test drive" and only played to about midway through the second level, and was already becoming bored with the repetitive nature of the engagements with the enemies. It does not help that the framerate is "marginally playable" at best on my P4 3GHz/Ti4200 config even at 640x480/low, despite certain hardware sites that would have had me believe otherwise. From what I can tell, the multiplayer aspect of DOOM 3 is mediocre at best... I know that wasn't supposed to be the focus of this game, but as someone who rarely plays through a single-player campaign more than once, it becomes a critical factor in my decision to purchase the game. I think I'll stick with UT2004, which is approximately 1000x more engaging in that arena.

All in all, considering the exceptionally high price, combined with the fact that after a few hours of "trial play" I am not all that impressed, I think I will be deleting the game and saving my money for now... however, I am fairly confident this will be a game I do purchase 6 months or a year down the road when I have more capable hardware and the price has come down a bit.

I just purchased this game this morning. I've been playing non stop for hours. I think it's excellent. It's dark, but when everybody came off speaking of it negatively it gave off the wrong impression to me. I really thought there is a good balance of dark and lighted areas which gives Doom its perfect atmosphere. It's Id's vision which finally game to life. I love it.

The AI is surprisingly smart. Dodge, lunge, take cover, random morph-ins ext... Each monster has their own way of attacking and strengths. The levels are different and offer a new surprise each load up. The stories and PDA info give a little extra flow to the plot. Im not going to say depth, that would be false.

I think the game is excellent for what it is, a first person shooter. Is it better than Far Cry? I would have to so no. But Far Cry is not any better than Doom 3. They're just different. And if you like Doom's story and thrill appeal, you'll may actually love it.

I however cannot condone that it was 55 Dollars MSRP. 45.00 or 39.00 would of been just right.

Why do you openly admit that you have pirated a game? You're such an idiot. Why couldn't you just wait for the demo? That's a little bit more legal. People like you piss me off.

I personally feel that there is no reason to download a pirated copy when you KNOW that there is a demo on the way.

Just because of the fact that you're an impatient little (fill in the blank), all of you who "test drive" and "test your hardware" feel it's legit to break the law. All morals and crap aside, you are simply breaking the law. What would you say if you were caught like all the unlucky people by the RIAA (who deserved it for sure)?

"I only wanted to test it out?"
"The game is too expensive?"

Both those are crap. A Ferrari is too expensive for me, and that for damn sure doesn't justify me going out and stealing one. For those who download and won't buy the game, die a horrible death. For those who download the game whether or not they have preordered it or plan to pay for it, you are in the wrong too. Impatience isn't a reason to do this. You've waited for 4 friggin years for crying out loud, so what's another couple of days? What's a couple more weeks if you're just wanting to test it out to wait for the demo? It's just plain stupid. I was patient just like MANY other people out there, and purchased my game legitly.

Kinda sad too, cuz I've had the game for 6 hours now, opened the box finally and installed it 3 hours ago, and still have yet to play it. I really want to though, just want it to be completely dark out when I play.

My rant is over, so flame on like you do to everyone who says something similar to me with the exact same responses (varied with a few words)... at least we anti-piracy people can give better/different viewpoints.

BTW: I am obviously in complete agreement with everything you've said brigden. I'm glad you posted here too.

Were you playing this on the hardest setting? And have you unlocked the last difficulty? Didn't think so.

I'm guessing it will be as much of a disapointment to me as Return To Castle Wolfenstein was. Both games play off those great old memories you have of playing the original games for hours on end. Ahh, I remember 4 way Doom2 games on a BBS.

I wish FarCry would get down to the $19 price range. Then I could buy it, and have it hold me over until the Doom3 price drops.

Sorry man, didn't realize how personal it could get.

I said that I deleted the game after testing it, and that's what I did. I am not going to play through the whole game and take advantage of id's hard work without coughing up the dough. Had a demo been available, I would not have downloaded the full version. I wanted to know ahead of time whether or not I would be interested in purchasing it the day of release; I made my decision, and now the "pirated" copy is history. It is my humble opinion that if you have a problem with that, you are simply too absorbed in a world of absolutes (i.e. "PIRACY IS BAD!!") to see the reality and practicalities.

BTW, as I said, I plan on purchasing the game at some point in the future and playing through it then.

I openly admit that I downloaded it, but I also openly admit that I'm buying it tomorrow when my craptacular Gamestop finally gets it in. Do I piss you off too? It is legal to own a copy of something you legally own. As of now, I guess I piss you of. But tomorrow, my downloaded copy becomes legal.

Well, the $55 price tag is only a bit higher than the standard, but I don't buy games often and $50 seems like a lot to spend on one to me unless it is exceptional. I am not saying this game in particular is outrageously priced and others aren't.

chalk me up as another unimpressed.
I spent 3 hours after working out last night finally getting a water-block on my 9800, working it into my water cooling loop, and testing OC. I knew my wife was gong to pick up a copy she reserved for me today. I played about 30 minutes, and started working on filtering the rest of the video cards down. How do you shoot something you can't see? Having the bright outside sun come in just makes that even worse. I can't play at max eye-candy, so I got a game that isn't all that geat looking, and has gameplay circa 98. MEH!
Good news:
She's really happy with the 9600Pro upgrade she got.
I finally got off my lazy butt to put my coolerless 9800 into my system.
The 9800 OCs to Pro speeds without any issues(samsung ram).

I'm not going to bash or anything here, so everyone can feel relieved now

I just wanted to say that I feel like $50 is a pretty good price point, considering you pay 15-20 for a dvd. Just think how much more fun and overall use you get out of a game compared to a dvd? I guess I should expect someone to say that dvds are too expensive now... lol

Yeah, people just don't see the value vs entertainment of other things in life. Going to the movies, amusement park, arcade, concert, etc etc. If you actually take inflation into account, prices are pretty much the same they are today as they were 10 years ago.

Which is why I guess they're forced to cancel concerts because nobody wants to buy the tickets. Supply and demand has always been the same. They new demand for this game was likely going to be high.

Cna I just put a trade mark on the "Duct tape" comment. People are starting to throw that arounda ll over th eplace and In pretty sure I mentioned it first.

ANd for those oif you that pawn it off sa saying "if you dont have the skills to juggle a flashlight and your gun..." Thats not the freaking point. The point is that in 2154 or whatever the year is you THINK there would be some sort of technology (enter duct tape) that would allow a gun mounted light or since Im in some sort of damned space suit you thin kthe suit would ahve a light... or **GASP** night vision. Oh wait... 2154? WE've had those things for decades already.

AND WHERE THE HELL ARE MY LEAN BUTTONS?!
