Actually, have to say that for a game that spends most of its time in 'inside' rather than 'outside' environments, I would have expected better performance. I mean, I expected better performance at times in some rooms. For example, the 'Infirmary' with the beds/tables was a bit sluggish in places and its not exactly the hardest scene it has to render.

I have a similar problem to Cawchy87. I am running a very fast PC with an older video card (Gforce 4 MX) and the game is only marginaly playable. I get Framerates of 20-40 fps notmaly, dropping to 7-8 when I enter a large room or get in a fight.

The funny thing is that when I play on Low graphic settings 640x480 with all the options turned off I have exactly the same performance as on High 800x600 with high quality effects and bump maps turned on!

This is really weird and makes me think that the video card may not be the problem. I do have a really crappy CD drive though I don't see how that could contribute to steady chop on the screen. Also my HD is 3-4 years old, but its an 80 gig and should be accessing that slowly...

If anyone has any ideas on how I can resolve these issues I'd b eglad to hear it!

AMD 64 3000+ (2.0 GHz) not overclocked
GForce 4 MX (64 MB RAM)
512 MB pc3200 400Mhz RAM
Soundblaster Live!Value
20 fps

what the hell is going on???

Rig - AthlonXP 2500+ @ 3200+ 2.2ghz
1ghz PC3200 - 2-2-2-5 200mhz
NF7-S V2.0
Nvidia 61.77

Geforce3 Ti200
640x480 Low Quality - 32.7FPS

BFG Geforce6800 GT OC
1600x1200 High Quality = 56.7FPS

Big difference between my Ti200 and the 6800GT

My GeForce 4 Ti 4400 runs it just fine in 800x600 low with 2xAA or at 800x600 medium no AA...all advanced options on...smooth even through firefights.

I've played through over half the game on my 64MB Radeon 8500, Low Detail and 640x480 averaging 20-30FPS... If you play smart you can easily get through it.

Thankfully I've been able to solve the crashing issue I was having with my laptop and have been able to finish the game @ 800x600 with Medium Detail.

hahaha how weird...i have:

athlon 2500+ barton
512 pc3200 ddr
geforce 3 ti200

and im running doom 3 on:

1024x768
medium quality

i dunno how many fps im getting yet, but it plays fine. it gets a little choppy when i open doors, but its pretty tolerable. all the advanced settings are on default too, so no aa/af or vertical sync.

Doubtful, depending on your idea of 'plays fine'. Do you have shadows disabled? The Geforce 3 just doesn't have the fill rate, esp for stencil shadows, and certinaly not when being fed by a K7.

I get my 6800U this week, in the mean time I'm using:

Athlon 64 FX53 939
K8NSPNX-939 nForce3 Ultra
1GB Corsair XL
original GeForce 3 with 61.77 drivers <<---

and im getting 30-60 fps at 640 x 480 depending on whats on screen

High quality is actually doable, albiet a bit jerky at ~12 fps in really complex areas.

GeForce3 simply can't run the game 1024 x 768 but like I said, depends on ones opinion of 'plays fine'

The card is still the limite, but coming from a TBird 1333 on a AMD761 + 512 MB PC2100 actually helped more than I thought it would given the same card.

Now where is my GeForce 6800 Ultra... should be on my doorstep any day now...

Edit: I take that back, wow it does run quite well even at 1024 x 768 albeit medium quality. Still its asking a bit much of the GF3 ... poor thing.

From the looks of things the vid card is outdated, but since you all can play it on your systems with the ti200 looks like my system is getting out dated too. I bought it 2+ years ago and it still has run every game i have asked it to. I have a 9700np coming this week (hope it flashes alright) do you think it will boost my proformance quite a bit? Or am i too cpu limited?

haha my definition of "fine" is simply just playable. I'm not expecting 40 fps with an oudated Ti200. Yeah it gets choppy when some goons come out directly in front of me, or when I have to walk through doors, but it's not absolutely unbearable. Haha, by no means am I saying it's running at 9800pro/5900 performance levels, but in a sense, "it gets the job done."

...at least until my video card comes in this week.

Do you run dual monitor? If so, that kills your framerate. You need to shut off the dual monitor option before playing DoomIII and probably unplug the other monitor or TV or whatever too.
I have a friend who couldn't play DoomIII with a 5900 until he shut off the dual monitors.

OP - is your system a willamette P4? Given your ram, it obviously operating on single-channel memory.

I think that's the problem. If it's a willamette, you're almost down to celeron performance levels

I have run the game on my secondary system.. 64meg Radeon 8500, AthlonXP 1700+, it's playable on 800x600 but low detail. I was surprised just how crappy it ran to be honest!!!

my comp:
p4 2.0 ghz
geforce3 ti200

SB live! value

Not sure if anyone has mentioned it yet, but your lack of RAM is probably contributing to the problem as well. The box even says 384 minimum
