Doom 3 was just another evil tool to sway believers

I'm curious about this argument, how is doom3 supposed to sway believers? Yes, the game does make hell real, but it isn't a glorification . . .

Jesus Christ! These religious nut jobs really annoy the hell out of me. They could find ANYTHING in the world to vilify and claim it is 'un-Christian.'

They could claim that 'Crest Whitening' toothpaste is amoral with a straight face.

Dumbest thing I've ever heard...but then, it is their house.

Good luck! I'll be ordering it soon!

BTW-I'm 37 years old and a parent. Not very religious though.

Edit-How did they feel about Diablo I and II?

You might try to tell your parents that the point of Doom3 is to stop the hell invasion.

1) Play any Led Zepplin album bacjkwards for your Parents

2) Jam out to Ozzy's Suicide Solution

3) Move out and do what you want to do with your life.

Your pick

You in a sense feel like a god in your own little world. Some people with mental issues, like your parents, may have a hard time breaking out of that world. Why would they want to give up a world were they have complete control over? It's a form of schizophrenia. Most serial killers thought they were gods too.

The next thing we need is another guy thinking he's really killing deamons even though their just people.

So, your point is that his parents shouldn't play this game?

Do you think that your parents are going to be right about the game and somewhere along the line you get a super demon power mushroom to help you along your way? NO IT ISNT GOING TO HAPPEN! Or you could show this thread to your parents and be like "see anandtech said it was totally down with jebus :thumbsup:". Or is it that you have been told all your life what to believe in and now you are doubting your parents wisdom but still need anandtech to verify that you are right because you wont just stand up for yourself? WTF?!

well i dont know how you were raised but its their house, their rules. i could care less about the rest of your post. unless you disrespected your parents and didnt give a sh!t about them, then i could understand where your coming from. i dont agree with his parents, yes hes 18 "move out, etc etc" im sure i will hear that but as long as your under your parents roof you should atleast respect their wishes(although that sucks chaz/OP)

my parents threw it at me when i was addicted to quake2(who wasnt?) and i told them it was a game and nothing more. i still live with them and am 19 and they havent said one word about doom 3.

parents will be parents

Heck, my father brought home Doom2 from work for me when I was 7. Man, those were the days. Doom 2 with my friends, and then when we all got modems...oh, man.

Well, I could too, and I'd be right, because 'amoral' means 'has no moral value either way.'

the word you are looking for is 'immoral'

Immoral and amoral are not synonyms.

Religious or not, it's a freaking game. Jesus christ... I won't put down religion, which would start a huge and vastly entertaining flame war... actually maybe... nah I'll stop there. I'd also advise getting as far away from them as possible, as soon as possible. You say you're 18? If college is coming up, I hope you picked someplace far away, if not you can transfer. If you're working, move out.

The greatest struggle is always "Does God exist?"

By suggesting that a literal "Hell" exists, this game affirms that God exists.
Then the next question is, if God exists, what is his nature.

In all honesty, I don't think this game is going to make anyone believe in God or not.

Well think of it this way would they rather have you shooting demons from hell or angels from heaven? They can call it Salvation 3 and the cyber demon can be replaced with Jesus or something like that. I'm sure they'd love to see you use your BFG and splatter those holy beings right against the walls Anyways if you're not shooting demons from hell what else can you shoot? People? Monsters? Bio engineered super freaks? I dont know what I'm getting at but it's just a damn game!

Well, my hope for now can be summed up in "leave the door closed and assume they won't notice". Biggest reason they even found out is that one of my friends who was over last night (genius that he ain't) was asked by my mom "well, is it as cool as it's supposed to be?" And he was like, "Yeah, it's really sweet, there's this one dude and he's like 'I know Satan exists... I built his cave.'" Which A) I beilieve is supposed to be cage and B) doesn't set a real positive mood for parents... Such a deal...

*spit take*

Yeah, if anything I'd say this game has a positive message, not a negative one. You, a lowly grunt, singlehandedly stop an invasion from Hell. And if you mess up then you can go back and try again. The whole thing is an allegorical refference to the human soul's struggle for righteousness and God's willingness to give you as many chances as you need to over come your own inner demons, and also that no matter how much power you could get from a demonic contract the human spirit (the allegorical component of the BFG) can overcome it. At least, that's what you could tell your parents. Or you could be honest and say, "it's a game."

Now if you were playing Painkiller they might have something to say.

Edit-How did they feel about Diablo I and II?

I know Diablo was brought up above. I've never actually played it myself. Considered it many times, but I get kinda bored with those overhead "clicky" RPGs... Like to have a little more involvement in the action. I'm not sure that they'd really care with Diablo (unless I mentioned the title) because it's so old nowadays. With Doom3 it's "the latest and greatest" and they go "Oh my gosh! This is what our kids are playing". Heh, it's that whole paranoid parent thing we've all had to suffer since GTAIII... They don't take the time to get involved with it so they always view it from the outside.

In response to "if not demons from hell, then what?" Very nice point indeed. I was recently reminded (and found it rather ironic) that when I was younger and just getting into games, especially FPSs (say about age 12, 6 years ago or a little more) they always wanted me to buy games where you killed aliens or strange creatures instead of games where you killed other people - Look, Mom, no people!

The logic behind your parents response is that its Doom, thats it. In the media since its release in what 1993? every time some young person who played any video games what so ever did something bad, Doom came up. Despite the fact that no one even still played Doom. Now its back and ready to take the blame for a whole new generation of kids who are already mentally unstable.

Plus you are 18, albeit in their house. If they don't want you to play then don't but at this point if Doom is gonna mess you up then you are already in trouble.
