shimsham, you seem to have a similar perspective to my own. I enjoy the John Carpenter Sci-Fi Horror movie effect the game has. Heck, even the spiders remind me of "The Thing" and the place I'm trapped in is similar in a certain sense. I empathize with my character and it makes for exciting and blood pumping fun. The Immersion is largely created by me I "act out" if you will, placing myself in a Martian research facility overrun by hellspawn. I navigate the place understanding it is confined because I'm in a martian research facility. I can't reiterate enough that I believe it to be one of the essential points to fully enjoying this game. I'm trapped! I'm trying to survive! I'm assailed by some evil shiat but I'm armed and I have an itchy trigger finger.
No the enemies aren't very intelligent, but they don't have to be in the cramped quarters we are throwing down in! They try to overwhelm me by sheer weight of numbers at times. It's known as insensate evil and it's a concept that has troubled our species' psyche for millennia. We also have a natural fear of the dark that this game plays/preys upon. Hearing things shuffle, scuttle, slink, ect. in the dark causes our imaginations to dredge up all sorts of horrifying imagery. BTW, Thanks be for the duct tape mod! I swear it looked almost real when I first saw the fat Gabe Zombie's face in it's narrow beam! I play 1280x1024 4x/8x and this game has a surreal atmosphere that is right out of nightmare imagery.
I will conclude my Doom3 musings with this. This game certainly isn't the type that appeals to everyone *obviously* Perhaps the reason is that they are afraid to let themselves be afraid? So they refuse to immerse themselves, but rather expect to have it forced on them? Don't know, don't especially care. Because, for those of us that do enjoy it, I think we share the frame of mind intrinsic to enjoyment of the game. I believe that frame of mind to be based on the ability to let our primal fear come out to play :light: Few games ever elevate my blood pressure, but D3 has delivered!

you strike me as insecure, that is all.
No anger or resentment here Unfortunately the text we read allows for us to mis-interpret each others "tone". I made the comment you seem insecure because you seem unwilling to explore the possibility that you are the reason you are not enjoying the game and not the game itself. Perhaps you simply require a more dynamic gaming experience ala UT2k4? or you just have a preference for large maps and military style tactics and throwdown like CoD or the Battlefield series? Perhaps this genre just isn't your personal cup 'o tea? That's all good, I'm just suggesting other reasons that some may actually relate to? I can only speculate why some don't get from the game what others of us do, and my post was just my personal perspective about why I thought that might be, and how I approach it so you could possibly have an opportunity see things through my eyesOriginally posted by: computerABUSER

I am just trying to point out that your frame of mind greatly effects the D3 experience IMHO, and that enthusiasm and willingness to "go with it" can make the cramped spaces, simplistic enemy AI, and lack of more dynamic or varying game play the essence of the fun to be had. I don't see simplistic AI, I see evil insensate. I don't see cramped spaces and small maps, I see terrifying close quarter combat with powerful supernatural enemies that seek my very soul. I don't see repetitive spawning and same old scare tactics, I see my enemy using the best tactics for killing me in the confined space we do battle in. I guess my entire point is that I believe this game is more about embracing fear than avoiding it through use of your higher brain functions. I just think if more people would put their logic and reasoning on hold, and try to remember what it was like to be a scared kid who likes the closet door closed and the nightlight on, it would be a lot more fun, that's all
