DOOM 3 IS NOT MULTIPLAYER!!!

You have to be kidding me. Are you telling me that they're going to rest on the laurels of the game's story to draw people in? This is ridiculous. Honestly, I have 0 desire to play Doom 3 now. Who cares?! 99% of the fun of most FPS games out right now is the multiplayer aspect. In fact, 99% of the fun of most PC games period is multiplayer. BF 1942, WC III, AOM, Starcraft, Empire Earth, and many more have little or no value to me other than their multiplayer options. This is ridiculous. John Carmack, I'm going to make a prediction here: sales of that game will be half of what they could be with multiplayer.

OK, apparently (judging from the first few posts already) there is going to be some issues with the fact that this report came from The Inqwell. READ THE ARTICLE! This isn't something they heard in a back alley, they detail what John Carmack said about not including multiplayer. They didn't read chicken bones to come up with this, Carmack said it specifically. Once again, this is not a rumor, this is fact.

It's graphics will be the benchmark upon which all other games will be measured. Also, who knows what'll happen when they start liscensing the engine? I bet some pretty sweet games could be made.

what the hell? I could've sworn I read that Doom3 would have multiplayer but it wouldn't be the same focus. I even remember reading something about how the dark and moody atmosphere would play a really important role, like how people would have to utilize the shadows. Was I just dreaming?

You're dead right. They want this game to cause people to go out and buy new computers that can handle the game.

Thorin, I hadn't heard of this before, and I still think it's worth mentioning. I'm simply awestruck that they wouldn't make it multiplayer. Do you not agree that this cripples the game. Regardless of how good the single-player is or how good it looks, there are still a bunch of people that will beat the single player in the first day and then quit playing it. The single player in any FPS isn't enough to give replay value to the game. It never has been and it never will be. This is just sad. I really can't believe they are doing this.

This is not news. This was announced waaaaay back. Long before any screen shots or demos had been seen. Probably before they even really had the engine going. I personally am fine with it. I think it's time for a good, solid single player shooter again. If they pull off a decent story, I think it will be fantastic.

So they'll make money off lisencing the engine. That's great. But this isn't going to jump-start the industry like it was supposed to without multiplayer abilities. Every day I read about another person that wants to build a computer to be ready for it. I'll bet that half of them wouldn't bother if they knew it didn't have a multiplayer aspect at all.

Acutally, when you think about it, they probably won't make much off of the engine because it's clearly not very economical to design anything multiplayer on it.

So instead of just making a single-player only game, they'll make one with a multiplayer aspect that's so poor that it's more of an insult than anything. I join you in your disgust :disgust:

I still say the game is more of just a fancy tech demo so they can lisence out their engine. I have no doubt that it's designed to work well with a multiplayer component.

I'll still be buying it. And I see NO problem with it requiring high end video cards... I hope to god for once it will teach the normal consumer to stop buying Dell Gateway etc.. PCs with total crap video cards.

Unreal, Unreal 2, Deus-Ex (i don't count the lame MP patch they came up with) were all good, primarily single player FPS. personally i was looking forward to some kind of coop in Doom3, but i'm not going to go off the deep end here. most people, btw, don't have broadband. and i know very few other than serious games who ever go to lan parties. single player has been, and will for a long time, be the major market for games.
