Unless you've got a video card with 512mb of ram on it, don't plan on playing it in Ultra quality mode no matter how much system memory you buy

Yeah right. nVidia and ATI cant get their heads out of their a55es as it is with the 6800 and X800 let alone 512 MB versions...

The hardware benches are saying Ultra quality is possible with 2048 MB system ram with a AGP 8x card, but I would have though dropping 6.1 GB/s to 4 GB/s would hurt the game more than having another GB would help it...

Aren't 512mb video cards for workstations? Who'd build a workstation just for gaming?

Not only are 512mb cards just for workstations, they would play Doom 3 like ass. Workstation cards are suited for things like CAD and Ray Tracing and don't play 3d games all that well. They tend to use totally different chipsets from gaming video cards (unless you count Nvidia quadros).

The thing with workstation cards is that the arent designed on how many Frames Per Second, what matters is Seconds Per Frame and how accurate and detailed the image is in the shortest amount of time to render. As stated, Nvidia and even ATI uses the same chipset from gamer cards in workstation cards as well. It is just the driver is coded different an accessing features that games dont use and would slow down rendering on games. I could keep going on, but its late. But I think i heard/read somewhere that 512MB cards will be out this fall.

I need to wake up early to go to BB and anywhere else to look for DOOM3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got my Ultra from eVGA so I'm covered to use their step up program for either 512 MB versions before year end or PCIe or both!

The step-up program is essentially for current generation cards. You have 90-days from the invoice date to request a trade-up. The cards must be available for purchase as well. Unfortunately there isnt really any chance of the next generation cards coming out before November/December at the earliest, since refreshes usually occur every six months, which would be after the trade in period.

2 GB is insane. I don't know about memory bandwidth because it would depend on the AGP port and how much bandwidth it is able to take, I'm not sure about that value.

You should even want to play in ultra when High quality is already killer and there is .1% difference that is very negligible.

what's weird is that he implied that he was still at work at best buy when he posted this ("my shift's over now so i'm going home . . .").
Do they really give employees internet access while they're working?

yep, we techs have full net access without any of the intranet restrictions the normal kiosk and pos registers have.

It isn't just Anandtech that people are claiming this on. It's popping up everywhere, mostly from known Best Buy employees.

I'm guessing it's very possible that it's out. It's just that this his 3rd thread on it, but I guess I should forgive him since this is the first one in HD.

Is there some kind of rule against posting threads in different forums? If there is it's stupid so don't bother quoting it.

I posted this in the Doom3 thread over in software and I'll post it here also for anyone who may be tempted to waste their time calling BB or driving there today:

I called all the Best Buys here on Long Island (NY) today (Saturday).

They all say it does not go on sale until Tuesday, 8/3.

As a matter of fact the BB newspaper flyer that came today makes a big deal out of an event at one of the local stores here where they are inviting people to come get in line starting at 10:30pm Monday night in order to buy the game at Midnight.
Maybe I'll go.

My congratulations (and envy) to those apparently rare individuals who did manage to get an early copy.

Remember what BB did with UT2K4. They put it out earlier than the weekly ad said. I talked to a manager when that happened cause I got screwed like many of us. He said there are no penalties for putting new games out early like there was for DVDs and CDs. So it could be that they are putting D3 out early just because they received them and/or they screwed up cause they're goobers.

OK, word from my local EB...

Some best buys are in a lot of trouble. Here they sold a few copies before the manager yelled at the employees who were selling it. EB will be releasing it on tuesday, as will a few other stores. However, it has not been authorized to release it early.

So, it's likely that some people have purchased it @ BB, but not likely that it was allowed by the distributor.
