My brother works for BB in Mentor, in the Cleveland, OH area, and he said that his store manager said that all northern Ohio BB's are not allowed to sell the game until 8/4, because they would be fined if they sold it earlier. It seems to me that different BB's operate on different schedules for some reason.

Has anyone found a store in the Cleveland area already selling the game?

You guys better read up before doing rash things like buying an extra gig of ram...

http://www2.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NjQ0

From the article:

"Ultra Quality is the cream of the crop for DOOM 3. In Ultra Quality nothing is compressed. Normal maps, and specular and diffuse lighting are all displayed at full resolution with no compression. Because of this, there is a tremendous amount of texture data needed on the video card, upwards of 500MB. While it will run on lesser cards, you may experience hitching or pausing due to the graphics card having to swap textures in and out of its memory buffer. That is why this setting is recommended for 512MB video cards. There is nothing stopping you from trying this quality setting if you want to, just keep in mind that the memory load is huge."

From Robert Duffy's .plan ( http://www.bluesnews.com/plans/313/ ):

"In Ultra quality, we load each texture; diffuse, specular, normal map at full resolution with no compression. In a typical DOOM 3 level, this can hover around a whopping 500MB of texture data. This will run on current hardware but obviously we cannot fit 500MB of texture data onto a 256MB card and the amount of texture data referenced in a give scene per frame ( 60 times a second ) can easily be 50MB+. This can cause some choppiness as a lot of memory bandwidth is being consumed. It does however look fantastic and it is certainly playable on high end systems but due to the hitching that can occur we chose to require a 512MB Video card before setting this automatically."

I just checked with other BB's in the twin Cities area , and those stores that have sold Doom3 are getting fined.

IT IS NOT RELEASED YET. According to 5 BB's in the Minneapolis/St Paul MN area.

Just got back from the local (Clearwater, FL) Best Buy, EB Games, and Babbages. No sign of Doom3 other than the preorder boxes. *IF* this is true that some people are playing it I'm wondering if it's just a few select stores that sold copies early and/or if we're looking at warez.

I too called my local BB in Holyoke, MA. Guy said on the phone that it wasnt going to be released till next week. I personally think they wanna hoard (sp)? all the copies for themselves . Not that I blame them, I use to do the same when I worked there in computer hardware sales.

Holyoke, yea. I'm from NY, think I've been to that one. That's actually in Ingleside, right?
I remember when the CompUSA there used to be a Computer City store before they went out of business.

While we're talking about Doom 3 and it'll save me a phone call and a who knows how long wait time at BB - if you use the preorder box at BB will you be guaranteed a copy on release day (not several days later, release DAY)?

Someone in the thread mentioned they worked at BB so I'd figure they'd know

What's going to happen if I buy the game and try to run it on my system?

I have an Emachine laptop Model M2105 2.8-GHz Intel Celeron; 256MB DDR SDRAM; 40GB, 4,200-rpm hard drive; 64MB shared Intel 82855 GME graphics; DVD/CD-RW combo drive; four USB 2.0 ports; 15.4-inch WXGA widescreen display blah, blah, blah...

Can my system even run this thing on minimum?

Graci.

Yes it is in the Ingleside (sp) Mall actually. The Old Computer City now CompUSA isnt part of the mall its a shopping plaza just outside the mall location. I liked Computer City back then, i got some sweet deals on hardware.

You wont be able to run this game at all to be honest. First and formost, video is very important. Intel Integrated Video wont do the job. #2, RAM; iD has stated 384MB which you only have 256MB.

Not to mention the Celery 2.6 is is worse than a P41.6, which is what Doom 3 says is the minimum to run the game.

Actually, because of the intel graphics onboard, it may not even install. From what I read at HardOCP, Doom 3 has a built-in hardware search feature that optimizes the game to your hardware. If it can do that it might not even allow you to install it with those graphics.

Actually he said 2.8, but no difference. You are correct about that, but only reason I didnt not mentioned it cuz the video chipset on that system alone kills the notion of playing the game... Dont need to look at any other specs.

Called BB near me, the company put out a memo to all stores NOT to sell the game until Tuesday, seems some yahoos in other stores jumped the gun. I also asked about the high end cards and I was told that those will be online items, at least at this BB which is on the smaller side.
Don't get your hopes up.

OUCH. I feel for you. Just came back from Chelsea NYC BB. They didn't get it in stock yet. A customer service guy confirmed that some BBs in the midwest were already selling, but that that store may not have it until Aug. 5! Damn, I may as well pre-order, I save $10 bucks and get it earlier.

Not a totally wasted trip though, I picked up Call of Duty on sale for 29.99 this week to hold me over.
