DOOM 3 Slowdown: PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!

It was the new Catalyst video driver; last friday i updated the 4.12 catalyst driver i had to version 5.2 that was recently released from ATI on 02-09.
Last night, After trying such actions as playing at low settings, tweaking, defrag hard disk, even reinstalling the entire game, with no solution at all, I decided to uninstall the 5.2 video drivers, ran drivercleaner, and installed the old 4.12 driver, and when i started the game the problem was gone, now I'm getting mostly 60 fps (42 in very hard combat time) at 1024x768, with medium quality, and no tweaking at all, I can say i'm very happy with this perfomance.
In the other side i'm very dissapointed about this ATI driver related issue, i was a Nvidia user for about 4 years with no driver problem at all, but i decided to change to ATI mostly for money reasons (ATI 9800 was cheaper than GeForce 5900). I have had heard some odd stories about ATI infamous drivers, now i can say those stories became true for me!!
Well, i won't try to find what was wrong with the drivers, i will just stick to my old 4.12 drivers until a new release, then will try it carefully.

Some people just get bored with "older" games. He may not even have liked it when it was new. I thought it was OK, I played it through all the way, but I was disappointed. I had built up it's "greatness" in my mind out of anticipation I guess.

Nevertheless, Goyik, what was it about the CAT 5.2s that made Doom 3 perform so poorly on your system? I sold my copy so I can't test this out myself.

The primary reason 'cause I'm playing DOOM 3 right now, 7 moths after its release time, when for most people this game is dead meat, is MONEY, I'm not richie rich, i have to save some bucks and reserve it to buy a new game, also i don't sleep in front of stores waiting for the release of any product to be the first buyer.
About the driver i don't care what is wrong with it, I will stick with the old one.

WTF Halo was one of the worst games ever... mainly becasue shooters on a console are dumb...

and yes Halo is freaking old as crap...
Doom3 was terrible was off my drive within 48 hours of purchase....
ill wait for Q4 with a real multiplayter game than that POS 4 man DM
and stupid predictable demons jumping out at every corner...
far cry was far superior game for shooters... and HL2 is a bit better too..but not much

On that note, I thought Far Cry was absolute crap and haven't touched Halflife 2. Doom 3 was alright, but I havent managed to drag myself through the whole game yet so that's not a good sign.

Shooters on consoles are dumb, you're right on that. But, again, only to those who were initiated into the FPS world on pc. I know someone who started fps on console and hates pc fps. Mainly because he gets owned hard everytime he plays...but still!

Did you check to see if you have 'custom' config settings in 4.12 ...?

... and did you re-enable the 'custom' settings after installing 5.2 ...?

I also noticed a 'loss' of performance in the pre-5.2 (5.10?) drivers.
So, I didn't bother installing a driver that has no potential. (5.2's)

BUT, if you read the 'text'... you can see they were optimizing for the newer cards.. and some application issues in the last 2 releases.

I'm still using 4.12's,,, you can't expect an increase in performance if they say there isnt any.
As a long time ATi owner (6 yrs and 2 cards ..lol)

... I ALWAYS make a backup before installing ANY driver.

I wouldn't complain, just do some research before jumping into new drivers. I usually wait 4 or 5 days before installing drivers ,,, (so others do my initial testing)
You'll be happy with ATi,, they have a driver release every month. And, sooner or later,,, some of them are keepers,,, (esp for older cards)

(Esp if you have Nvidia based MB's also ....)

Anyway ,,, you did ALOT of trouble shooting for a driver issue. Live and learn ....
.. make a backup next time ! ... It's so much easier to find problems that way.

The CAT 5.2 drivers offer substancial improvements for X800 series cards. I'm a happy driver upgrader.

what a bunch of crap. could you be more wrong? probably not. i bet the millions of people that play Halo dont agree that it is stupid. wait, let me guess...they are stupid too because they play it, right? i play FPS on the computer and the consoles, and the only people i ever hear complaining about consoles are those that suck with the controllers. the joysticks are a lot harder to master than a mouse and keyboard. dont cry because you cant figure out how to do it and tons of other people can. there is a learning curve, moreso than the computer, and if thats what makes a game suck in your opinion, then your opinion is basically worthless. this is a matter of personal preference, not made-up facts (reference your post for details).

Halo does suck and it has nothing to do with the controls...
i bought when ti came out was not impressed at all...
mutiplayer sucked... the regular game was ok at best... very repetitive...

on PC Halo was a trainwreck...

halo2 just more of the same... Ive got a CE if anyone wants to buy it

Cat 5.2 + Doom on my AIW 9700pro is working great. Perhaps after drivercleaner, Cat 5.2 would have been fine as well?

In my experience keyboard/mouse is far more difficult to master than controllers. Master being the operative word. Both can be picked up in a few hours, but for example for a k/m newb to own an experienced k/m user would take a lot longer, imo, than in the case of a controller.

about those 5.2 drivers and my x800 pro. when I installed them I immediately got artifacts all over the screen when I enabled overdrive. So I uninstalled them

Doom 3 is a great game to comment on in regards to video set-up. I wonder how many people were in the same boat as me......had a Radeon 9800PRO when the game was released but recently upgraded to a 6800nu. Doom is transformed into a much more playable game. Doom is an old school shooter but it is also about a new graphics engine we'll probably see alot of in the future.

IMO Key/Mouse is the only way to game.

I Started out on Playstation with Doom.(never had a PC until 2000) THen when Goldeye 007 came out on N64 I was all over that for a long while, next Turok. So I was only about controllers. I remember a good friend mentioning using Key/Mouse and I shot down that idea without even knowing.

So I got a 600mhz/128mb/Voodoo3 for the low price of 1600$ and started playing Half Life. I went out and bought a Sidewinder controller cause I refused to use keyboard. Played it through , then tried the keyboard, never used it for a FPS again.

Now racing games and sports games thats a different story. RTS and FPS games need keyboard.

Doom 3 is a scream and one of my all time favorite FPS games. That's okay if it is a little dated (seven month - hehehe!) it is still fresh to me.

Most of the people playing Halo don't have a clue anyway. I consider it a game for posers.

And I remember playing with a joystick. Too hard to aim only with your thumb. As a result, they have to make the controls extremely insensitive. And if you have the option to change the sensitivity, one setting above was too fast. And how else are you supposed to circle strafe, fire, and jump at the same time?
