Using 61.77 Drivers

Ran Doom@1600x1200 0xAA High Quality: 47.1 FPS

Seems very similar to my rig as soon as the videocard comes in . FPS seems kinda low for a 6800GT though .

My bad, the test was w/ vsync on. With it off @1600x1200 high quality 0xAA, I get 61.8 FPS

Got it, made the correction.

This should be stickied for awhile.

Cat 4.9b gave me a ~10% boost at 1024x768 and ~6% at 1280x1024. I don't know why the gain was smaller at the higher resolution; I'm going to run the benchmark again at that setting to see if it was a glitch.

Thanks again, Keys. This is giving us a better system-to-system comparison than any website has been able to yet IMO.

I now feel depressed with so many ppl with a 6800 series card. Yet here i am with a GF4 TI4200 O/C'ed. But the game seems to run ok for me... i get about 28FPS or so... but ill edit this when i get around to testing and configure the settings.

I know what you mean. I'm trying my best to hold out for a PCI-E GT. The 5900U seems to be handling things nicely though. Doom3 and FarCry.

I'm using a 9800xt with stock times and I updated to the beta drivers--and I'm STILL getting artifacts.

I've seen on other boards mention that new coolers on the GPU solve the problem, but I haven't been able to verify which coolers work on the 9800 xt.

Someone mentioned Arctic Silencers, but Arctic's pdf says the Silencer is incompatible w/the 9800xt, and someone else mentioned Thermaltake Giant ii/iii, but I've seen no indication they're compatible either, especially given that they're copies of the Zalman ZM80C-HP, and Zalman doesn't mention the 9800xt EITHER.

Bottom line: no idea how to solve this problem for 9800xt users.

I had similar problems w/ my 9700PRO at 360mhz on the core (325 default). Backing it down to 350mhz solved it for me. I would suggest *underclocking* your GPU a bit to see if that solves it.

It's a shame that you can't even run your card at stock settings. Maybe ATi doesn't have the greatest quality control department; they should have caught something like this IMO (if it's a common hardware problem). The XTs do have very high core speeds though; I'm thinking that's what the problem is.

I would underclock before buying an aftermarket cooler like that. There's no sense spending money on a graphics card you're going to need to replace soon anyways.

I realize this will make me sound like a true o/c novice, but how does one underclock a GPU?

LOL.

You use the same utility as you would to overclock, but instead of increasing the core clock speed you decrease it.

I would suggest PowerStrip, ATItool, or Rage3D tweak. Take your pick. The last two are free, the first is shareware.

Let us know which one you get and we can help you if you run into problems. I would back the core down 10mhz at a time until the artifacts are gone. Hopefully that will solve it.

I've never over/underclocked, but after this thread I did--and you see in another thread that simply by dropping my core from 412 to 400, the artifacts disappeared.

Now if someone just will help me figure out which cooler works for a 9800xt! I have no problem spending $40 to extend the life of a $500 card for another year.

You should drop your settings some. When you get a few hrs into the game, ull find that multiple enemies makes your framerate drop below what is playable. Keep it around a setting where u get ~40fps avg and you will be able to play MUCH better. Just dropping my settings from 1280x1024 to 1152x864 yielded me 2x as effective in the hard spots, w/o much IQ loss.

Well, no PM, but here you go:

------------

driver: CATALYST Windows XP 4.7

CPU: Athlon 2800+
memory 512 meg
vieo card: ATI 9600 SE (yes the 64 bit bus)

Wasn't planning on doing testing since my 6800 is on the way but I never see this card tested anywhere:

640x480 low quality: 24.5
640x480 medium quality: 24.3
640x480 high quality: 19.9
640x480 ultra quality: 10.9

800*600 low quality: 17.0
800*600 medium quality: 16.8
800*600 high quality: 14.3
800*600 ultra quality: not going to happen

It's easy to see how the 64 bit bus kills the card.

Great work, KP2003. I've been holding off on buying D3 because I was concerned about performance on a 9800 (I'm real picky when it comes to FPS). I think your table has just convinced me.
