Although that may have made it scarier. Mulder and Scully could be sent to hell to battle demons, while having mastered the art of simultaneous flashlight/firearm use long ago. The mod worked well enough, though. I don't dislike Doom 3, but never had enough interest to finish it. Maybe some day.

I recall my scariest gaming moments as being in the original Thief and Undying.

I don't think Doom 3 was scarier because it was dark. The first time a guy jumped down behind me, I got a little freaked out but after that it became pretty predictable. "Oh no, I'm entering a dark room that is empty... i wonder what's going to jump up behind me?" I seriously got so many kills because I could predict where those idiots would come from. I thought doom was seriously lame.

I have to agree with the other posters that said RE1, hands down the scariest game ever when it came out!

I found FEAR pretty creepy, sort of like a Japanese horror movie, which is great.

Call me wimpy but in Farcry, the first time I encountered the invisi-trygens it was 2 in the morning, in a dark room, and it scared the crap out of me. I was walking around in some lab and I could not see any of the creatures, but I could hear them growling and breathing all around me...gave me a couple shivers (though it was pretty cold that night )

The original Half-Life, when the mother headcrab shows up ... I remember seeing it lumber across the terrain and saying out loud "Oh, SH*T"

Best game that made me do a genuine Metal Gear Solid style "!" would have to be Resident Evil.

Right now I'm voting for this game though. It's pretty hard, I just died while typing this post.

BRB, someone's at the door. How odd, I don't normally have visitors.

I'd say Eternal Darkness would get my vote for scariest game ever- DooM3 doesn't rate(at all). D3 is about making you jump, I'm not prone to flinching or jumping. I enjoy a good slasher flick to be sure- but that it due to the comedy of it. Games like Eternal Darkness scare me a hell of a lot more- Lovecraft/Poe instead of Craven/King(I am a fan of all four of them, just for different reasons).

ED did manage to make me jump nearly out of my seat, they only try it once about ten hours into the game(man was it effective for me)- the lack of them doing it was what made it so effective. You kept waiting for it to happen because of the type of game it was, you realize after long enough that it isn't going to happen and a few hours later it does- your guard is completely down at that point. Extremely effective and the antithesis to what D3 did(hey, we only have 389 zombies spawning in behind the player, we need to add more so they will be even more scared, oh, and just 85 creatures busing out behind doors.... we need to keep pushing that).

That would be my choice for the scariest part of any PC game. It does a good job of maintaining suspense, and keeping alive the fear of the unknown. Not like monsters spawning in and monster closets opening up behind you 100 times in a row.

SS2... oh yeah :Q And the first one - it's a shame it's so old that it predates 3D actors and mouselook. Back when I could still put up with the interface, there were a few places in it that I dreaded having to explore. I think there's a 3D remake somewhere.

T3's Shalebridge Cradle is a given, that level gave me the last real thrills & chills I've got from a game. I won't spoil it for anyone who's not played. It's very disturbing. T2 only had one level with any scare potential in it, first Thief has a series of levels in and around an abandoned city section/cathedral that were well done, made you feel very unsafe.

The original DOOM was pretty creepy when it was still fresh. DOOM3 felt incredibly contrived to me. Never even finished it.

F.E.A.R. seemed to be off to a good start, but I've spread myself thin on new games to play on this year's system refresh. I haven't progressed beyond the second area, but its creepy factor seems to have potential. I'll return to it when I'm in the mood, right now I want to play NFS:MW and Oblivion.

OK, I had to revive this thread. I just played the Condemned: Criminal Origins demo... really creeped me out. I found the AI to be pretty decent, and the enemies moved realistically. Pretty dark game (as it should be), and there is some wierd stuff (like the forensic work) that I am not sure I like, but overall it is pretty cool.

Despite a lot of the complaints that many people had about the game, I enjoyed Doom 3. I'm sure there was an aspect of bias in that since I loved playing Doom and Doom II when each of those games came out.

Still, despite enjoying the game, I have to agree with a lot of other people here when it comes to Doom III being scary. I found it was rather scary when I first started playing the game, with that huge "Boo!" factor. However, after the first few hours, I got used to the environment and I got used to the surprises. That really took a lot of the scare-factor out of the game. So while I beat the game and enjoyed playing it, I don't think it was actually all that frightening.

I think Doom3 is scary in it's own way, making you cautions about every shadow. Well, I was anyway. It's only drawback was that it was a bit too long. Also due to the games advanced engine, they couldn't show too many enemies on screen, but had about 1 enemy per room. I thought it was a great experience.

AVP2 was scary, but it was more fast paced. Probably the scariest game I've ever played. Made my heart race like hell. I haven't played System Shock2. Couldn't get it to work.

I wasn't aware that Thief DS had any scary levels, but then again, it was 2 years ago. That's not my fondest memory of the game. Likewise in HL2, a non-scary game, if I ever saw one.

FEAR was freaky, but it was different than Doom3 and AVP2, and is less successful due to it's hollywood-like scares, which most of the are right in the beginning of the game and are on the demo. After that it's more of an action game with an eerie theme. How scary can a little girl be when you've seen it in movies so many times.

My vote: the original Resident Evil, right when it came out.
Most definitely was a damn scary game. But I think AVP2 beats it out. AVP2 marine campaigne gives you the feeling of being alone and in the dark with creatures coming at you from every direction.

Yup, the first cut scene with the licker...was playing in a dorm room with a bunch of friends with the lights off and the sound cranked, we all jumped a swore.
Wrong Resident Evil dude.

(i had no idea there was a t rex! it was huge!)

anyone know of a modern game that is scarier than doom3? quake4 not even close. its the sound in doom3 i think that gets me... anyone else notice?

Yeah I agree. I built a machine to run that game with the full experience. I played it when it first came out at 1600x1200 on a 22" screen, 5.1 surround in a dark room. I would flip the lights on and take a break every 45min or so. Very intense.

The fear wears off a bit midgame though. Not sure if you just get used to it, or get brave because you have bigger guns.

I've heard system shock can be pretty scary and fear had a few brief moments too.

I thought Doom 3 was pretty freaky in spots , I just loaned it to a friend of mine who just built a new system and is just getting into gaming , and he likes shooters. I had my LCD projector over at his house and had it set up with the surround sound on , I heard him scream like a school girl a few times. Not literally , but definately made him jump , and every few minutes , he was saying ....shhhhh ....did you hear that? What was that? Did you see that?
Friggin funny!! Needless to say , he's hooked. Now he's wanting to set up a small lan party type deal to have some friends over 3-4 people , and shoot the crap outta each other....
Once I figure that out if that can be done.....we'll see if it's still as scary..
