Thief - DS is an excellent game . . . make sure it is patched and head over to LookingGlass Forums for the [super-skilled fan-made] hi-res texture packs and game tweaks that will greatly improve your T3 gaming experience . . . http://www.ttlg.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=83

i actually started to play it over [although i am playing KotOR II now for the first time] . . . my x850xt can run it awesome compared to my 9800xt . . . and although it has its [platformlike] faults, it is actually better than its predecessors in that you you don't have to sneak . . . the weapons are surprisingly pretty good.

The level that has awesome suspense is Shalebridge. Finely crafted like a Hitchcock movie.

oh, it starts kinda slow . . . almost like a RPG . . . bear with it for awhile as a Grand Story Continues to Unfold . . . and get used to 'sneaking' for the full experience . .. . the 'best' thief players kill NO one [that is not ''required' by the Story]

If you're into some easy to challanging puzzle solving....try Silent Hill One , Two, and Three. Silent Hill The Room didn't thrill me per say.

FEAR also had it's chilling moments.

Doom 3 lost its scary appeal halfway through. it got repetitive, the same old monsters popping out in the dark corners and behind you.

Alien Vs. Predator 2 was a lot scarier.
F.E.A.R didnt entirely live up to its namesake but it was still a lot better than Doom3.
Heck, I got more chills in parts of Max Payne and Duke3D than anywhere in D3.
And those are just shooters. I got the heebie-jeebies in plenty of graphic adventure games before. (Hell and Bad Mojo and Still Life and 7th guest and 11th hour.)

Nope, they tried too hard and missed the target completely. So many things went wrong with that game, the scary part couldnt survive.

old games.. I remember getting 7th guest as part of our first cd drive/sound card...

Well Apop, I think I might give the game a try... You have convinced me... Now, I just need to find a way to sneak it past my wife.

Man... I'm seeing lotsa posts about the Resident Evil and Silent Hill series... but really, none of you guys will know scary until you play Fatal Frame 2... I'm not talking about being shocked or spooked, this game is nothing like that... All I can say is, if you have never played this game, and are looking for an erie experience unlike any other... play it... It turned a friend of mine, who captained hockey teams to provincial championships here in Canada, into an insomniac only just recovering. Mind you, we were baked out of our minds when we played it, but still, those of us who weren't said they'd never load that thing by themselves...

Most frightening, terrifying moments for me in games:

Thief 3, by FAR. Nothing else comes close. Although technically the game isn't really *supposed* to be scary, its just that one level happens to be.
System Shock 2. You just feel so, so alone. That alone was enough to be frightening. But you need to play it in the dark with no one around you.
Unreal. There were a few levels that scared the crap out of me.

I can't comment on any of those Playstation games since i've never owned a Sony console.

I was playing eternal darkness (GC) one night a few years ago. The room was dark and I only have one backlight which eerily lighted up the room. I got scared after completing the first story, and shut off the game. I haven't restarted playing it since...

My vote: the original Resident Evil, right when it came out.

Yup, the first cut scene with the licker...was playing in a dorm room with a bunch of friends with the lights off and the sound cranked, we all jumped a swore.

It may not be the scariest game ever, but definitely one of the darkest. And not to be beating a dead horse here, but not being able to have a weapon and flashlight out at the same time was lame... Although that may have made it scarier. Mulder and Scully could be sent to hell to battle demons, while having mastered the art of simultaneous flashlight/firearm use long ago. The mod worked well enough, though. I don't dislike Doom 3, but never had enough interest to finish it. Maybe some day.

I recall my scariest gaming moments as being in the original Thief and Undying.

cool ill pick it up. its on xbox, right?

i vastly prefer an atmospheric scare than a "fun house" scare. thats why silent hill got me so much, and doom3 in the some parts of the game.

Doom 3 isn't scary, Fatal Frame II: Director's cut, is unbelievably scary. Not only can you not do the daemons/ghosts justice with weapons, you are a young teen girl armed with a non-digital camera! Haven't tried FFIII yet nor the first one but this one just crossed the line after getting bored with Doom 3 and FEAR.

I thought FEAR was really good. It had a good atmosphere with some creepy imagery.

Same with the Ravenholme level in Half-Life 2. Damn you fast zombies!

Same here. I thought the first part of FEAR had some very nice creepy moments. Also, the haunted house portion of Vampire: Masqurade bloodlines was pretty scary.
