heheCarmack has even been quoted saying the story in a video game is about as important as it is for a porn video.

hehe
Been playing ID games since Quake, and I always wonder why people complain because it's pretty obvious what one is getting into when they play one of their games. It's always been about blasting the baddies, without any real story telling or innovation.
I, for one, enjoyed Doom 3 and look forward to Doom 4.
You realize a workstation from a studio like Pixar can take over a day to render a single frame right? I think they said the average frame time for Toy Story 3 was seven hours. However, with the next generation consoles there are already plans to produce video games using the exact same graphics as full length feature films and that's when I expect audiences to start demanding higher quality all around.
You should have played starting with Doom. Blasting baddies was never more fun.
Good action took a back seat to everything else starting with Quake. Doom 3 was when I knew for sure ID had lost their way.
Thats why I love Serious Sam and Painkiller so much.

These next gen consoles must be pretty damn fast
Hey, as long as it's not as bad as the install process for Strike CommanderI suspect though you'd need more like a couple hundred gigs to get serious improvement in the graphics. We'll have to wait and see, but I remember the days of shoving ten or more floppy disks or DVDs into my machine to load a single game.

So is there any new news on Doom4?
"a serious lack of confidence in the project management at id".
I am far more interested in Unreal Engine 4 than ID's Tech5 engine.
But hey, maybe we can get a Doom 4 movie!!
Pretty soon it will become difficult to tell if you are watching a movie or playing a video game. That's the whole point. As great as the Unreal 4 is the technology will become obsolete the minute its released. We've just taken rasterization to its limits and its time to move on to bigger and better things.
Yes, I remember reading somewhere that both Tim Sweeny and Carmack had said that hardware for their next gen game engines doesn't exist yet. What I understand that they'll scale current engines for higher level hardware, rather than make new concepts for faster rendering (Which I understand is not a very easy thing to do).
