If you think about the medium is only now becoming good enough to support porn video games. With a few exceptions the most popular games today are about as sophisticated as comic books and reality TV. However, with the next generation consoles there are already plans to produce video games using the exact same graphics as full length feature films and that's when I expect audiences to start demanding higher quality all around. I'm waiting for that first smash hit like the original Star Wars that pushes the budgets of AAA titles up around 300 million dollars and forces Hollywood to move in on the genre lock, stock, and barrel.

Been playing ID games since Quake, and I always wonder why people complain because it's pretty obvious what one is getting into when they play one of their games. It's always been about blasting the baddies, without any real story telling or innovation.

I, for one, enjoyed Doom 3 and look forward to Doom 4.

You should have played starting with Doom. Blasting baddies was never more fun.

Good action took a back seat to everything else starting with Quake. Doom 3 was when I knew for sure ID had lost their way.

Thats why I love Serious Sam and Painkiller so much.

You realize a workstation from a studio like Pixar can take over a day to render a single frame right? I think they said the average frame time for Toy Story 3 was seven hours.

These next gen consoles must be pretty damn fast

Id hasn't lost their way. Pushing the technology has always been their first priority and arcade style shooters have been just a means to that end. With Doom they scored a huge hit because the fans literally made it into a best seller. Id provided the first easy to use modding tools and then published the best mods as Ultimate Doom.

The id tech 5 doesn't really allow much in the way of mods, but the id tech 6 should redefine the shooter with ray cast geometry. Sort of a combination of a realistic looking shooter and minecraft on steroids that brings a whole new meaning to interactive environments and level design.

Think of it as a combination of a movie and video game. Id used a rendering farm to bake many of the graphics effects such as lighting right into the textures so you can just stream them off your hard drive like a movie. The hard part is getting the console to keep up with the huge volumes of data that need to be displayed when you turn around fast or whatever.

I suspect though you'd need more like a couple hundred gigs to get serious improvement in the graphics. We'll have to wait and see, but I remember the days of shoving ten or more floppy disks or DVDs into my machine to load a single game.
Hey, as long as it's not as bad as the install process for Strike Commander

Seeing how I thought Rage was a flop, I really do hope they find a good team to put Doom back on the map.

Hm, this looks troublesome:

http://kotaku.com/5851953/doom-4-indefinitely-postponed-following-rages-disappointing-launch

Doom 4 "Indefinitely Postponed" Following Rage’s Disappointing Launch"

"

The apparent source says that Zenimax and Bethesda made the decision based on the "the issues and reviews" surrounding RAGE's launch, which in their eyes has demonstrated "a serious lack of confidence in the project management at id".
Remember that, before you get too invested in this, at the moment the news is entirely unconfirmed. We've contacted Bethesda for comment and clarification, and will update if we hear back."

A lot of unconfirmed information so it seems. Doom is far too big of a name to let go, so I imagine it is a matter of time before someone takes it over. However I'm reminded of how Silent Hill went down the drain after it got sold out to different developers.

Kotaku is so full of crap their office must be in the bathroom.

Id denies they ever put Doom 4 on hold and has been hiring people to work on the game. As for Rage, it sold reasonably well on consoles or id would be just another bankrupt studio.

I absolutely loved Doom 3 and I hope Doom 4 is the same but with better graphics.

Doom 4 is supposed to be more similar to the original series then Doom 3 and not be a horror theme.

A lot of people complain about Doom 3, but I loved it and it scared the hell out of me. I look forward to a Doom 4, but will surely need a PC upgrade.

I even recently bought Wolfenstein off Steam for a scant $5 hoping to find something that had the feel of Doom 3. I see I'll need to keep looking. Granted I'm not far at all in the game (still in the train station), but the stupid scripted dialog from the partisans during the fights is just plain annoying. "Don't let them drop you..." Who thought that one up, and who even says that? As though in the midst of a firefight elite commando BJ Blaskovitz wouldn't have already thought of that?

I am far more interested in Unreal Engine 4 than ID's Tech5 engine.

But hey, maybe we can get a Doom 4 movie!!

Pretty soon it will become difficult to tell if you are watching a movie or playing a video game. That's the whole point. As great as the Unreal 4 is the technology will become obsolete the minute its released. We've just taken rasterization to its limits and its time to move on to bigger and better things.

who cares about the flashlight thing??? i loved the bloody game. It was scary as , well, Hell and i in fact upgraded just to get a load of those shiny metal floors in full detail. And dodging those fireballs from those goddarn Hell Kights was a joy. The whole game was such a thrill.

Yes, I remember reading somewhere that both Tim Sweeny and Carmack had said that hardware for their next gen game engines doesn't exist yet. What I understand that they'll scale current engines for higher level hardware, rather than make new concepts for faster rendering (Which I understand is not a very easy thing to do).

pretty sure that at some point Doom 4 will be out. it will take long as SS for example but let's hope it won't be as disappointing as Duke Nuken for example

Yeah, the math and concepts behind the technology were all developed by other people years ago and could require a quantum computer to improve upon. Carmack is just the engineer who had the skills and vision to put the pieces together to make something really new. Half a dozen other studios are exploring what other engines are possible, but I don't expect any serious improvements in rendering on the software side of things anytime soon.

Not that it matters. AMD has already released hardware acceleration for the technology capable of handling textures as large as 32TB, Intel will demo their pram replacement for dram soon, and next year HP will begin selling memristors. The real question is how soon the emerging technologies will support ray casting and that's anyone's guess.
