I'm sick of using windows based imaging progams. I want something simple that will work. I found this:

Image for DOS

It works with all Windows OS's (32 and 64 bit) and you also get Image for Linux.
I emailed them and confirmed that it will work with Win 7.

Does anyone have experience using this and does it work as advertised.

I've used DD successfully before. It's primarily a Linux/UNIX program, but the version in Cygwin works. I see there's also a standalone one in the unxutils project, but I have no idea how well it works, if at all.

Not when you use Acronis bootable rescue media. Windows is not involved at all. It is a Linux GUI.

All of the old imagers, DriveCopy, DriveImage, and even Ghost, are capable of creating bootable media, and Windows is not involved. Some are different forms of DOS, and the newer ones are Linux variants.

I clone/image drives every week - have done so for years, and my basic rule is, never do it from within Windows!

i use SystemRescueCD which is a bootable LiveCD based on Linux.
it's free, open source and it can image Win7 without a problem.
here is a guide.

Thanks, I'll check out SystemRescueCD but I don't have any experience using Linux. I don't mind spending a little money on an important app, and was seeing if anyone had used this before. There aren't many user reviews and most of the ones I found were from older versions.

I may just buy this any be the guinea pig. I have never imaged a drive in windows and don't trust it. I've mainly used Ghost and really liked the older DOS versions, but as the program has evolved it has become a bloated pig. I did mess around with Acronis but it seems to be similar to Ghost.

I currently run Win 98, 2000, XP, Vista, Win 7 RC, and like the idea of one program fits all. The bonus is no win install and it fits on a floppy or CD.

Thanks

you dont have to know Linux in order to use SystemRescueCD. plus, it's light and it works from the LiveCD with no installation required. take a look at the guide (linked in my previous post).... it's pretty detailed. however, if it feels complicated to you, use Acronis.

btw, i run WinXP in an Athlon 3000 Desktop and also in an old Celeron 800Mhz TabletPC. plus i run Win2000 in an old P3 Desktop. all 3 machines have been flawlessly imaged/ghosted using SystemRescueCD. i've been using for about 2 years and i trust it.

if you have a BartPE LiveCD you can use DriveImageXML. it's very easy to use and works well too. however, there's a lot more hassle involved in learning to use BartPE than there is in learning to use SystemRescueCD. both LiveCDs are of overwhelming usefulness, though.

let me know how things go. if you have any problems/questions, feel free to ask. btw, you can browse the web from inside SystemRescueCD using the network setup wizard. just type "net-setup eth0" (no quotes) on Terminal.
