http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/06/12/peanut-ban-on-airplaines-_n_610247.html

When I started reading this, I was thinking it was the stupidest idea ever. I was thinking "don't eat the peanuts if you're allergic to them."

Then I read:

Peanut allergy can cause life-threatening reactions in people ingesting even trace amounts. Just breathing peanut dust in the air can cause problems – though usually minor ones – such as itching, sneezing and coughing.

and

Advocates with the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network say the answer's simple: planes are confined spaces where the air and dust particles get re-circulated. And there's no way to stop and get off during a severe reaction during flight.

So yeah, I guess they should try to cut down on peanut dust or serve something else.

No I think he has a point. People suffocating due to their throat being swollen shut because they breathed someone's peanut dust are a bunch of pansies.

Just eat something else you fat fucks.

Why should we have to do without the only thing in "airline quisine" that's even remotely edible? Because someone MIGHT be allergic to the product? Not my problem. If there's a remote chance that an allergic person MIGHT be exposed to the allergen, it's up to THEM to take precautions that don't involve banning the product.

Airline peanuts are far from edible. Besides, SW gives out those 100 calorie packs on longer flights and they're way better than the sawdust flavored peanuts that they offer.

Yet they're still better than the "food" served.

Jesus fuck you are a crazy right-wing self centered fuckstick. Exactly what precautions do you suggest someone takes if they have an extreme allergy and they need to fly? Bring their own respirator and breathe only their own carry-on air for the whole flight?

Being a person allergic to tree nuts (although not seriously, and not specifically to peanuts) I think they shouldn't serve peanuts.

There is no "precautions" a person can take. There are no "preemptive" measures I can take to make sure i do not get an allergic reaction.

administering epinephrine, commonly known as an "epi-pen" is NOT a cure. Think of it as a bandage over a bullet wound. It will help for the moment, but unless you go to a hospital, you will be in a more serious problem.

The only thing I can do to prevent exposure to the point of reaction, is, obviously avoid anyone consuming the product. I do not even speak directly to people who are in the process, or shortly finishing eating anything with tree nuts.

I wouldnt be able to control the environment on an airplane which recycles the air.

So before you bash people deathly allergic to tree nuts, know your facts and dont look so much of a fool

"It's sort of like if you were allergic to dogs and all of a sudden they brought 50 dogs onto the plane."

That has got to be the dumbest comparison I've heard in ages, and I hear a lot of dumb ones here on ATOT.

Yeah, I get that some people have problems, but for those with serious allergies, how hard is it to pop an antihistamine before you get on a flight? FFS.

LEARN FACTS BEFORE YOU COME IN THE THREAD THROWING BULLSHIT.

There is no preventative measures that one can take regarding tree nut allergy. the best they can do is bring an epi-pen which does not treat the reaction, simply holding it off until hospital treatment is seen.

what I don't understand is how it took so long for the govt. to realize this as a potential problem.. I've considered "this" before but dismissed it considering how fucking often people fly planes and how there aren't any incidents to report on.

The issue with peanuts isn't that people are JUST allergic to them. People have all kinds of food allergens but few are as serious as nut allergens. We aren't talking about getting sick and throwing up a lot, we are talking about VERY sudden respiratory failure and death. Yes people with these allergies should take care to be careful themselves but a plane is not the same thing as a restaurant. If someone goes into anaphylactic shock on a plane it affects a lot more than just that person. The plane would likely have to be immediately diverted to a nearby airport and emergency medical personnel would have to take the person off. That's a potential problem for everyone onboard even if you are not allergic yourself. And with nuts the amount that is required to send someone into shock can be as little as trace contact. If this were about banning nuts in restaurants I would agree with you all but a plane is a different situation. Basically I'm sealed in a flying tin can with 400 other people, yeah even if I don't give two shits about your life I really don't want you going into convulsions either in this situation.

The problem then winds up in your lap as the plane would then have to make an unscheduled emergency landing and you get to you destination 5 hours later and hopefully with your luggage. I'd rather forgo the nuts just to eliminate any possibility of that happening..
