Dota2 invites went out today. Anyone get one?

The heroes in HoN were ripped directly from DOTA I think, I'm not sure what they've added since it came out but when I first tried HoN the heroes were exactly the same pretty much.

Icefrog gave them permission to port heroes directly at the start, but then revoked it once DotA 2 plans cropped up. So now HoN has a mixture of ports and original heros.

You sign up on Steam, and you might get a key (low chance), or have someone else invite you (as they send multiple keys to people so they can invite their 'friends'.)

Just got an invite. I can't figure out where my 2 friend invites are though. I go to manage gifts and guest passes and it just opens my steam inventory. Any ideas?

Hmm sadly it seems Valve has stopped giving 2 additional invites with the key starting this week. I signed up for the beta months ago and still no key


btw PlayDota.com are giving away 185 beta keys every 24 hours. Apparently they started doing this in October, but I just learned about this. You just gotta make sure that you have an old account there, as accounts that are created after the start of the draw are not eligible.

Yea I just got invited yesterday, but no friend invites. The production values in this game a pretty high so far, gave me a good impression. But the game itself could use some AA and I still have yet to actually play it.

Sort of. They always had some of their own heroes, just most of them were ports. Not sure Icefrog officially has rights to "revoke" the port itself, especially because S2 paid him to work with them early on.

He seems like the shadiest guy of all time, but at least the game is in the hands of Valve.

Finally got my invite yesterday. As others have indicated, it came without any additional "Friend" invites. I played one game last night. So far it seems really polished. I am going to have a steep learning curve as I never played Dota past the 3.7 Reign of Chaos versions.

Simple and sort of cartoony, same as all the games like this. Not sure why you'd expect anything else.

Half of it is like Heroes of Newerths and half of it is like League of Legends. It's the LoL half that I really hate...

yup, my friend got in. i was like gimme t he invite! and he said he couldn't find it so i called him a noob, then he showed me a thread on reddit so i took back my noob statement and he shared his account with me.

so far, i'm liking what i'm seeing. certain things i would change, like the Shop menu. i should be able to start typing to filter the items right away, instead of having to click into the text box.
too used to windows 7 start menu i guess.

You mean how you can tell the champions apart, and everything doesn't look the same? I like that aspect of the game, but to each their own.

i don't know how they're going to deal with leavers, but it does keep W-L-D stats.

there is also a 5 min reconnect grace period.

As far as I can tell, leavers are not a problem at all in the beta. Leaves are bad to have on your record, for one thing. For another, a game is considered "abandoned" once one player has left and not returned after a short period of time (which exists for accidental disconnects). Abandoned games can be left without penalty by the rest of the players, the game is basically considered to be over the moment it is abandoned with no winner and only the leaver as a loser.

So if you do have a game ruined by a leaver, you can just leave the game yourself and find a new one, you aren't forced to play out a stupid 4v5 game. It also won't count as a win or a loss.

After beta, I am not sure if things will be as good, as I am sure part of the positive atmosphere right now is due to beta invites being rare and valuable. If valve does release dota2 as a free to play game people may have troll accounts and the annoyances will increase, but maybe they have a solution for that- for example only free to play if you already have $100 of games on your steam account, so you can't just create a junk account to troll on.

i've had leavers in 50&#37; of my games so far (3 out of 6).

so what mechanism is in place to prevent habitual leavers from even joining?
the record is one thing, but will there be something in place to enforce it?

and are valve and steam closer partners?
i thought steam was just a distribution channel.

I got my invite about a month ago now. The game is ok, played about 35-40 games, half of which players left the game. Right now there is no concede option so most games drag out to 40-50 min because the winning team doesn't push it out to win. It will be a great game once it has all its heroes and has a concede option as well as punishing leavers. Right now its kinda of frustrating though. That's what beta is for though.

To be honest though after playing HoN for so long i actually like it more due to its faster pace. In dota 2 it takes a few games to get used to the reaction time. Dota 2 will most likely turn out to be a great game. Hopefully it stays in beta for another year which is about the amount of time it will take for them to get all the heroes out at the pace they have been releasing them.

Valve created Steam, heh. Initially it was designed just to sell Valve games (starting with Counter-Strike and Half Life 2), and then when it got more popular they started selling indie games, and over time it became the giant digital distribution platform that it is right now.
