www4ASearchcom - Thanks for pointing out that this only has a 10" LCD, I was a little skeptical as to WHY this hasn't sold out yet now I know why. The last DOTD was HOT HOT HOT it actually did retail for $2999 and after coupon, $200 rebate, eBates and free shipping it was down to close to $1,700 and it had a beautiful 15" LCD and was a P3/650 I think.

Ubid.com auctions quite a few of these.. and the ending price ends up being lower than $1750 in many cases. It's an okay deal for normal people but certainly not for people at anand.

lol....
this place is just unpleasable..

I post some clues about what's comin' up and people want pricing, dates...

you all demand MORE SONY LAPTOPS! a Sony laptop comes up and the board goes....no, we meant a DIFFERENT SONY LAPTOP!!!

sheeeesh....

anyhoo....good luck w/ the DOTDs, but with Scythic or whoever potentially being able to identify who I am/was, I'll be doing a disappearing act...

Not trying to be a party pooper, but why is there this feeling that someone MUST rush over to Anandtech to post Buy.com's deal of hte day no matter what it is??? THose guys couldn't ask for better free advertising.

The forum is for Hot Deals. If you're not sure if something is a hot deal, you can check out a price-comparison site to see how it fares. But just posting it because Buy.com says it's a deal doesn't make it a deal. And again, not attacking the author of this post, just making a general observation.

MrBakaSan,
On behalf of most others on this board we appreciate EVERYTHING you have done for us!

You can't please everybody. I sometimes holdback posting a deal only because of ungrateful mean-spirited folks who try to pick a deal apart in order to make it look bad.

Again, thanks for all your help!

MrBakaSan -
Please, don't leave on my account!
I don't have any affiliation with BUY.COM other than shopping there and playing around...
And, if you're willing to share the site where you post the real details with me, I'd be more
than happy to tell you my little trick -- just please don't fix it.

scythic:

e-mail me at baka_san@hotmail.com....

I'm curious to learn what trick you're using....as one of the IT guys here, I'm quite intrigued...

and no worries, even if I wanted to, I couldn't (more aptly, wouldn't be allowed to) fix it...we've gone into code freeze mode to prepare the site for the holiday season onslaught...

plus I just don't have that much initiative anyhow...
and I'm staffed on a different project team that's building the next version of the site..........

I told my neighbor to pick one of these units up yesterday. Reluctant to purchase it on line, he called the 800 number. Customer Service was so delighted to sell one of these babies, she included free shipping and two $30.00 coupons.

Now all I have to do is figure out how to get things in and out of this package. I thought I would begin by asking Sony's marketing plan...

Luzer, I have been waiting to get my fourth Dell Laptop for a few months and spending time thinking of the best config. I would go with the Inspiron 3800 with PIII 600 14.1 inch, 128 RAM, and 10g hard drive for $1998. But, you can save $200 simply by going with the 600 celeron. I don't think most people would ever tell the difference to be honest.. Mostly laptops are just used for word processing, email, spreadsheets and such. Anyone doing heavy stuff with a laptop is deprived from a decent desktop PC. Anyone else have any thoughts on Dell laptops?

BTW: If you go through "Small Business" online and buy the PIII600 with the same configs for $1899. (I would spend the extra $50 for a single dimm... so later you have a slot for more ram)

I bought the Dell Inspiron 3800 in the last promo Dell had. Great system. Got a C-600, 64mb, 14.1 tft, 5gb, 24x cd, 56k, fdd, tv/video out,1 year free aol, Win ME, Works, encarta, etc. My cost $1300 shipped. I spend another $60 at crucial and now I have 128mb.

SSGTi;
that sounds like really good deal. i dont think i can get that anymore...
Unclemo;
i know dells are good. my dad has a 3800, and my friends have 3500, latitudes, etc but they controll the pricing, so its difficult to get a "good deal".
GENERAL QUESTION;
1. what is the difference between a 3500, 3800, 4000, and 5000?
the CSR tried to sell me a 5000e. i said "isnt that heavier than a 3800?" he said no.
then i said "isnt the latitude Cpt lighter?" and he said no. what is the truth?
2. what does on have to be to get a small-business purchase?

I just bought a Dell Inspiron 5000e for school/work 3 weeks ago. So far its great, it has a gorgeous 15" TFT LCD, PIII 600, 64MB Ram and 6GB hard drive for $1991 shipped. And most importantly for me it has an ATI 128 mobility video chip with 16mb of SGRAM. This was important for me because I am a S/W engineer writing OpenGL apps and I needed something that would do a bit of OpenGL hardware acceleration. I immediately added 128mb RAM when I got it for $115 (the Dell upgrade was over $200). It is heavy though, it comes in around 7.5lbs. When I was doing my checking the 3800 looked to be more of a mobile solution (lighter and smaller) and the 5000 looked to be a "mobile desktop". If you spend some time on the dell web site all the specs are there...

Dell makes the best laptops, despite being pretty pricey. IBM's up there too.

My old roommate 2 years back had a dell P2 300, it's still going strong.

ps...a "small business" purchase is just diff from the "home" by the bundled software...usually small biz PC's/laptops are cheaper, but I could be wrong here. I was always planning on buying a dell desktop, but by the time I had the cash I knew how to build one myself.

stonerdave - Also with buying through the small business section don't you get to choose Windows 2000 Pro instead of the Home section's Windows ME? I've heard though that Windows 2000 Pro is more processor intenstive therefore sucking up more battery life.

LuZeR - Why don't you tell us what you plan on doing with your laptop and what price range you're looking for? What are your minimum requirements? There's lots of good deals out there but people first have to know what your needs and wants are.

I am not positive, but I don't believe there is anything to buying from their small business links. I have bought a couple PCs through their site for my own very very very small business . Last time was 1.5 years ago and I don't remember anything special when ordering. You can always indicate to Dell if they question your "business" by saying you are a "trader" (investments), which does not require any other seperate tax ID than your own social security. ok? It is not dificult to get around that sort of stuff.
