Dotster.com - Domains for $1

Found this on SD and FW.

For only one hour today, Dotster.com will allow anyone to register a new .com, .net, and .org domain name for $1. This is a great deal, and is limited one domain per person. Dotster is a good registrar, but you can register a new domain name there, and later transfer it to another registrar if you choose to do so.

Their countdown is on the front of their website. It's for new domains only and one per person.

Oh man the site is getting owned. Trying to register the .org of my domain so someone doesn't snatch it up like the .com one was.

I can't even access their page. Might as well just spring for the $3 registration at Yahoo since their page loads at least.

I got far enough to see the fine print. It's only the first 1000 domains or 1 hour.

No way that lasts a full hour. Assuming anyone is getting through right now.

Don't count on it. I clicked on the link as the hour struck and I still haven't checked out.

I'll stick around for a couple of minutes, but that promo was a joke. They should have forseen the surge in traffic. I'd hate to have been a customer who needed to access their account during that hour.

Their site did some crazy lookup process showing you the availability of every single possible TLD choice based on the word you gave. Total waste of server time.

Not worth 15 minutes for each page to display to say you saved $7 on a domain name.
If you don't already have an account, heaven help you.

What a waste of time, luckily I have nothing to do at work. I went through about 5 screens, and finally got to the payment screen. I entered all my payment info and went to submit it and it told me coupon already redeemed and tried to charge me $13.95. Back to Namecheap.

I lucked out... happened to see this thread. Clicked on it. Created a new account and got my coupon. Got a domain I was wanting plus a bonus .info domain to go with it for $2...

Dotster is known to be a known spammer.

As ICANN requires you to have valid contact information on file (though I guess you could lie and risk having your domain revoked--my registrar is GoDaddy and they have contacted me before about it), my privacy is worth more than $1.

I had meant to post my reply in the other newer thread...

but interestingly enough I had gotten in on the promo. And they put 2 holds on my account - $2 and $17.94 (the original amount before coupon) according to the bank, the $17.94 charge is going through and not the $2. If so, I'll be charging them back and start sh!t with whoever I can legal-wise.
