405x6 @ 200lbs

although i haven't done deadlifts in a while because i'm having some kind of issue with my left hip right now i hope it's nothing serious. i can still squat although i'm not going as heavy as i was before. i also lost some strength when i went on vacation for a week and didn't workout and didn't eat a lot of protein like i do normally.

A week off should be quick to recover from. What's up with the hip though? I've been through tight hip flexor issues before. Light weight varied stance front and back squats help stretch mine along with consistent stretching every time I lift.

Not sure of my max, although I know I can rep 435# for 3-5 reps (BW = 180# last time I checked), depending on the day. I don't do traditional deadlift as much as I should, although I will hit stiff-leg every week. Right now I'm holding steady at 335x5 for a couple sets, then 385x2 or 3 for a couple sets.

gotta stretch. lifting will f^ck your sh!t up if you don't. I had some serious pain in my knees at one point. Thought my squating days were done. thought, yep, I'm that chump that says he can't squat because of bad knees. Turned out my hammys were tight and causing my knees to turn in. increased/added a stretch... BOOM, back to ATG squats

My best was 295 @ 150lbs, sometime last winter. I run 8-12 miles per week during the spring/summer but as the weather cools down I run less and lift heavier. Currently I'm trying to get my deads back up around that range (over 300 maybe) while running. I have been eating better and sleeping more so hopefully that will help.

Heck I did triple my bodywieght back in HS. I also used to be able to arm curl 125lbs 3 reps back then too but I don't lift anymore except at work. I figure If I can pick up a 400 lb generator and carry it to a truck by myself at 175lbs then I can probably lift quite a bit more with a belt on olympic set.

Getting there... I just started back lifting for the first time since HS about 7 weeks ago (I'm 38 and 195#)

I went traditional deadleft 5x225 3x250 and 1x275 supersetting with squats 230x5x5 today.

Felt like I could go heavier yet so I don't know where my true 1RM is. I've been following the 5x5 then add 5lbs the next time routine and since starting at 150# squatting, I've gone up this much 5# every time. Chest back and shoulders are getting much more defined on upper body days and strength just keep on climbing.

I'll be back to join your club in about another 8-12 weeks I'm guessing.

Added you. Yes if you're carrying a 400lb generator then that's pretty hefty at your weight.

All my lifts are weak as fuark. Except the deadlift. Don't know why.

So, the last time I did a dead lift was yesterday (June 9, 2014) -- 4 reps of 280 lbs at a body weight of 142.0. That puts me at 197.18% of BW. However, my calculated 1RM was 305 lbs. (which puts it at 214.78% of BW).

On June 3, my deadlifts were 2 reps of 280 lbs at a body weight of 141 lbs (198.58%). The calculated 1RM was 288 lbs (204.25%).

Also, all these were beltless, but with wrist straps.

So, does this mean I have to wait some more? :-/

Edit: Correction of typos.

IMHO, if you can't pull it without straps, you can't pull it

Yep, what Zivic said.

Java, just work on your grip using Hex dumbbell holds and do heavy farmer's walks, I'd recommend starting with 1/2 of your deadlift as a starting point.

Pulled 415lbs sumo about a year ago at 170lbs. Conventional, I managed 405lbs a few months ago at 160-165lbs. Can't really tell you exactly because I was using the gym scale with my clothes and shoes on. No video of the 405lbs because my girlfriend no longer goes to the gym with me due to job change.

Here's the 415lbs sumo:

Double bodyweight deadlift is a pretty easy feat to achieve. 6 months of crossfit with no extra strength training usually gets you there. I've seen that happen too many times by now.

I think you need to go to more gyms. Very few people lift 1x their body weight. Though I don't practice crossfit, I've been to a few hardcore xfit gyms with lifters dling 2x bodyweight with good form, but that is usually because they were oly lifters or some other athlete before.

I got a question, is there anything besides deadlifting that I can do to increase my grip strength? I am hitting a wall because I am having trouble doing sets. I'd prefer to avoid straps.

IMHO, if you can't pull it without straps, you can't pull it

I guess I have no choice other than to accept your informed judgment. And, I will. But, I would hate to think that there is absolutely no difference between me (pulling 1.99 x BW with straps, and no belts) and another person who does 0.75 X BW (or pulls nothing at all).

[About five years ago, in my local gym, I had one of the trainers tell me that if I was doing deadlifts with belts, I wasn't doing deadlifts. Who am I to argue with experts, is my philosophy.]

Now, the point is, I happen to have really thin wrists -- a genetic "gift" -- about 6.75" in circumference. I imagine that is the weakest link in the chain that comprises my deadlift effort. Could I try to improve on getting my wrists stronger, with this "handicap"? I guess I could. But, I don't aspire to be a powerlifter; my goals do include becoming stronger, but -- at the age of 58.5 years, and blessed with a very small frame (height: 5' 7") -- that is secondary (though still important) to my having an aesthetic physique and a low body fat percentage.

So, I need my major muscle groups -- backs, abs, lats, thighs, and more -- to benefit from the 2 x BW of deadlift weights when I work out. Trying to move along the "weakling" in the chain will impede the rest of my body from developing, is my thought.

Another factor: I have a weird, chronic right shoulder injury that makes it scary for me to try a mixed grip. So, I continue to use an overhand grip for my DLs. And, without a mixed grip, a 2xBW strapless-DL is likely beyond my realm.

So, I suppose I might remain a non-member of your elite club, which I admire very much. (And, if some day I do happen to make it as a member, I will be very happy with myself.)

Thank you guys, for all your feedback.
