IMHO, if you can't pull it without straps, you can't pull it
I guess I have no choice other than to accept your informed judgment. And, I will. But, I would hate to think that there is absolutely no difference between me (pulling 1.99 x BW with straps, and no belts) and another person who does 0.75 X BW (or pulls nothing at all).
[About five years ago, in my local gym, I had one of the trainers tell me that if I was doing deadlifts with belts, I wasn't doing deadlifts. Who am I to argue with experts, is my philosophy.]
Now, the point is, I happen to have really thin wrists -- a genetic "gift" -- about 6.75" in circumference. I imagine that is the weakest link in the chain that comprises my deadlift effort. Could I try to improve on getting my wrists stronger, with this "handicap"? I guess I could. But, I don't aspire to be a powerlifter; my goals do include becoming stronger, but -- at the age of 58.5 years, and blessed with a very small frame (height: 5' 7") -- that is secondary (though still important) to my having an aesthetic physique and a low body fat percentage.
So, I need my major muscle groups -- backs, abs, lats, thighs, and more -- to benefit from the 2 x BW of deadlift weights when I work out. Trying to move along the "weakling" in the chain will impede the rest of my body from developing, is my thought.
Another factor: I have a weird, chronic right shoulder injury that makes it scary for me to try a mixed grip. So, I continue to use an overhand grip for my DLs. And, without a mixed grip, a 2xBW strapless-DL is likely beyond my realm.
So, I suppose I might remain a non-member of your elite club, which I admire very much. (And, if some day I do happen to make it as a member, I will be very happy with myself.)
Thank you guys, for all your feedback.
