Double breasted suits and pleated pants look pretty terrible

Actually, pleated fronts work well only on skinny individuals as they tend to add visual mass. Under no circumstances should the pleats be even slightly stretched out. The creases should be sharp and they should never pucker, not even slightly, if they're done right.

Large individuals cannot wear pleats and look good.

IMO, pleated is OK but only if the pants are slim. Most pleated pants for cheaper suits are Hammer-style baggy. If you buy an expensive, conservative business suit, chances are the pants will be pleated though.

Not in my experience, and that's pretty much the wisdom I have gleaned from those around me that actually give a sh1t about fashion. Pleats just look really, really lame on thin people. (again, I'm thinking kahki-type overkill pleats; not the simple slack pleats that work with the suit, and the body type.)

Okay, double breasted suits are out like 3-pieces. As in WAY out.

Flat-front pants are for casual wear or young 20-somethings. Professionals still wear pleated and will continue to do so. Go to any decent men's suit store (not Men's Wearhouse) or tailor and ask. Plus, some of you got it backwards. You gotta be skinny to pull off pleats, while flat-fronts are more forgiving to those with dickdo's.

edit: I'm referring to slack/suit-style pleats, not khakis.

Talk with an actual tailor and don't base your idea of pleats off of the Wal-Mart or Dockers junk khakis you've seen.

well...some people can't pull off high end fashion like that anyway. i am talking mainstream fashion versus things that just aren't in, and it's obvious you don't have a clue or are long due for a shopping trip.

It is the advice of tailors and fashionistas that I'm reporting. It seems that there are dissenting opinions in the field, but that's not my concern.

I don't think I've bought any clothes from Wal-Mart. The few annual wardrobe purchases I make are the sale racks at BR....and a few others

i just bought 4 suits last november spending quite a bit of money. so yes, i have a clue, and yes, i've been shopping recently. dressing like a male prostitute may be in style, but not in my line of work.

I have always been partial to double breasted. But I can't buy them anywhere (that I can afford) anymore. Pleated is how I like my pants ... Op must have really bizarre dimensions to complain about double breasted suits.

There is no excuse for pleated pants. They are never ok. Especially not with a suit. Its just extra material that serves no purpose other than to make you look very fat. To think that people actually walk into a store and say "you know what? I want the pants that look like a pair of curtains. Those will look nice on me" simply blows my mind.
