If I open up a window on my desktop and then drag it left and right, I notice some tearing happening on the sides.

In games, I have to enable vsync (or force it with my video card drivers), otherwise I will experience tearing.

I also notice a little bit of tearing with this test image: http://img1.lesnumeriques.com/...promo/Remanence17.html

My refresh rate is 60hz in windows. As far as I know, vsync only works with 3d rendering, not 2d windows. Is there a way to avoid this tearing or is it just the way the panel is?

It's not related to the monitor. The Windows tearing happens on any display, although it will probably be more prominent at lower refresh rates. I think Vista's Aero interface supports vsync, which is the best way to get rid of it.

Check your video card driver for an update. Also, take another look at the card's control panel.

Aside from that, how do you like your panel? It's Super IPS, isn't it? I was takin a hard look at those till I got a very nice Dell S-PVA panel for $400.

It's H-IPS. I like it. It's a very nice all-round monitor. I does well in games if I can enable vsync (though I do notice that text tends to blur if it's moving.. e.g. a player's name over his head in an MMORPG).

I was going to get a TN for the speed, but it seems like everyone and their grandmother likes to take a huge dump on those panel types- so I got scared of them. This monitor was in the top gaming LCD list on "The LCD Thread" until it become discontinued (how much you wanna bet doublesight is replacing it with a TN model?). The Planar is still up there; it uses the same panel but has a polarizer and is around 900 bucks (the DoubleSight was around 700).

DS already replaced it, the new model is the DS-265W and came out a few weeks ago. It's the same panel, but with a different stand.

Also, none of the Planars have the polarizer. SOME DS's have it, it's a lottery. I think my 265W does have it, since I don't see any kind of glow at wide viewing angles, but I'm not positive.

So the blurry moving text and the window tearing.. something to do with a bad panel or is it just the nature of the beast?

The blurry text is due to the LCD's motion blur, but there is nothing defective about your specific monitor. Some TNs will do less of that (at the cost of image quality), but all LCDs exhibit it to some degree.

The tearing, as I said earlier, has nothing to do with the monitor as such and will always happen unless you use Aero.

Thanks for the info. I guess I'll have to deal with the tearing and having my games capped at 60FPS. I can start to see why some hardcore game nuts stick with the 120Hz refresh CRTs.

I suppose this may change if game engine developers start to code with LCDs in mind instead of CRTs.

Is it worth switching to the "GAMING" DV mode when playing games? What exactly does that setting do to the panel?

I don't think that tearing is a game programming issue regarding LCDs and refresh rates.

Here's a Hardforum post from not too long ago on vsync, refresh rates, and tearing - it describes the issue very nicely:
http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=928593

Depending on the games you play and your graphics card & drivers, you may want to try experimenting with "triple buffering". The forum post above discusses triple buffering in passing, but the TweakGuides page below gives more detail, as well as information on implementing TB in games:
http://www.tweakguides.com/Graphics_10.html

I've been saving up for a big upgrade on my system and monitor, and I've been debating which IPS LCD monitor to get. I was definitely considering the DoubleSight DS-263N until it was discontinued. I think that the jury is still out on the newly introduced DS-265W (why did they include speakers???). There's always the Planar PX2611w or the HP LP2475w (also very new), too.

Those articles are both very interesting reads.

The main reason I posted this thread was because I had a little bit of an "incident" with my monitor. I keep my headphones on a shelf above my desk. One day I went to reach for them and fumbled. They fell from the shelf, bounced off my keyboard, hit my LCD panel (causing the image on screen to flicker upon impact), and left a scuff mark behind. I was able to rub out the scuff with my finger, but ever since then I've been paranoid that I fuct up my monitor.

I don't know if there was screen tearing before the incident, but that's because I was never paying attention and looking for it. I sometimes worry that it caused some internal damage resulting in a reduced refresh rate / response time (damaged circuits can have a higher impedance). At the same time it is probably all in my head. I just want to know if my baby is going to be okay =P

I figured I would try to reassure myself by comparing what I notice with that of other DS-263N owners.
